As a little kid I hated reading. It wasn't until around age nine that I found a genre of books that fascinated me and got me to love trips to the bookstore. Now, it takes some hair-pulling and bribing just to get me to leave Barnes and Nobles. Some books you read and you simply cannot get into the story, others you can't begin to put down. For my fellow reading nerds, here are six books you won't want to miss out on.
1. "The Probability of Miracles" by Wendy Wunder
This story surrounds the life of a young sarcastic girl, Cam Cooper. She's dying of cancer and in a desperate attempt by her mother to fulfill her daughter's life with some memories, whisks her off to a place where mysterious yet miraculous things have been said to happen called Promise, Maine. Here, she begins to check off things she must do before she dies in an odd envelope. This book will have you both crying and laughing, and promises not to disappoint.
2. "Stolen" by Lucy Christopher
"It happened like this. I was stolen from an airport. Taken from everything I knew, everything I was used to. Taken to sand and heat, dirt and danger. And he expected me to love him."
Stolen is one of those books that make you question why you seem to not hate the bad guy. Gemma gets captured while in the airport with her parents by a mysterious man who instead of doing things you would expect a captor to do, he treats her quite differently. Your heart will be racing until the very end.
3. "Thirteen Reasons Why" by Jay Asher
This book is a must-read for reasons different than the others on this list. Thirteen Reasons Why is the story of a girl named Hannah Baker, but told through the eyes of Clay Jensen. It all starts after Hannah Baker's suicide. Clay receives a box of cassette tapes each labeled 1-13. As he goes on to play each, he begins to realize each tape is not only a story of Hannah's awful experiences, but reasons as to why she killed herself. However, there is a rule. Hannah has sent these to each person who played a role in why she ended her life. They must all listen, and then send it on to the next. If they do not do as she has explained, they will be made public. She has someone watching them to make sure they follow through. This eerie and heartbreaking story not only spreads suicide awareness but gives insight into the minds of many.
4. "Lullabies" by Lang Leav
“The words I heard from you today, are said when there’s nothing left to say. What I would give to make you stay, I would give it all away.”
5. "Wherever Nina Lies" by Lynn Weingarten
This book will have your heart pounding all the way through. Ellie's sister, Nina, has been missing for two years. In a spontaneous effort to track her down, Ellie departs across the country with a mysterious new guy-Sean. However, what she finds is the last thing she wanted, or ever expected.
6. "We Were Liars" by E. Lockhart
“They know that tragedy is not glamorous. They know it doesn't play out in life as it does on a stage or between the pages of a book. It is neither a punishment meted out nor a lesson conferred. Its horrors are not attributable to one single person. Tragedy is ugly and tangled, stupid and confusing.”
We Were Liars is the story of a very wealthy family who spends their summers on their private island. However, one year changes everything as an incident occurs that one of the main girls Cadence, can not remember what happened afterward. The story spins out of control and will have you guessing until the very end.
