6 Must-Do's and Must-Go's in Hong Kong

I have lived in Hong Kong for over 18 years; there are things I have missed doing and exploring after moving to New York City almost five years ago. When I go back to Hong Kong every summer, I need to make sure my to-do list in Hong Kong is fulfilled. As a local ‘Hong Kongnese’, even being regarded as a bit non-local now, I would like to recommend some of the things on my list to anyone of you who wants to or plans to visit Hong Kong some days.

1. Try some local cuisine in Cha Chaan Tang

I am sure you can find some Hong Kong styled restaurants back in NYC, but frankly speaking, those are not legit at all. Cha Chaan Tang is local tea restaurant found almost everywhere in Hong Kong. You can spot local Hong Kongese having Hong Kong-style milk tea or Yuanyang ( a mixture of tea and coffee) with signature egg and ham sandwich as breakfast. A buttered pineapple (with a piece of butter stuffed between a pineapple bun) is perfect for afternoon tea.

2. Hop on a tram and explore Hong Kong Island

Hong Kong Tramways is one of the oldest public transportation in Hong Kong. Unlike the underground train and buses, it operates without any AC. Get on a tram ride, you will get a closer look at the other side of HK. Old and traditional residential buildings are situated on each side of the narrow street. Sit on the upper deck and I am sure you will get the perfect view of the western district (Happy Valley, Causeway Bay, and North point). The local architecture and fast-paced living styles will certainly blow your mind away.

3. Go on a hike to the beach

One of the most famous rides in Hong Kong is called The Dragon’s Back. Hiking in the summer might be pretty tedious especially of the hot and humid weather in HK but the coastal scenery during the hike is definitely worth it. Standing on one of the highest points on the mountain, the blue and bare ocean are literally one of the best views you can get from a dense city.

4. Explore those small islands away from the city life

Going on a short mini getaway to the small islands located outside of the city is definitely something you should consider doing during weekends. Take the local ferry (around 30 - 45 minutes ride) to Lammar Island or Cheung Chau, it allows you to embrace nature and learn about the rural lifestyles of island residents. On weekends, it is usually crowded with people buying fresh seafood from fishermen. Don’t forget to taste some unique dessert, like mango mochi that can only be found on those islands.

5. Take five to 10 minutes to sit down and enjoy Hong Kong night view

This is a must for whoever going to Hong Kong. Spend a day in Tsim Sha Tsui harbor and enjoy the night view across the Victoria Harbor. You can easily spot one of the fewest famous skyscrapers in Hong Kong - Bank of China tower and International Financial Center. It is another view that you will never forget.

6. Local markets unlike the big shopping malls

Try taking a shopping spree along the Ladies’ market in Mongkok. Unlike brand names at the malls, you might find something surprising, cheap but with qualities. The stalls on each side sell traditional Chinese dresses, t-shirts for tourists, some other accessories and garments, especially things you cannot find elsewhere!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
