Now that Thanksgiving is officially over, it is now officially Christmas season! That means it's time to deck the halls, put the tree up and all that other tedious holiday stuff. While the people that really care about decorating are doing the actual decorating, you can join the rest of us that can care less about that stuff and would rather watch movies.
Every year around Christmas time, there is a list of movies that really get us into the holiday spirit, but as you get older it becomes harder to stick to the traditional list of holiday movies. In a way, you grow out of the classics, but still want the holiday cheer. These are some of the movies that have both the drama to satisfy your adult-ish needs and the Christmas spirit to keep your inner child alive.
1. Home Alone
The original one too, because there is nothing like a good Christmas classic to really get you in the spirit. Both grown-ups and kids love this movie, and it's a great way to start a Christmas movie marathon. It gives you the funny action, but at the same time keeps you asking adult questions like, "how do you not realize your child is missing?"
2. Love Actually
This movie gives us the lust and drama of a regular chick-flick, but at the same time shows you the power of love and how it can overcome anything, especially during Christmas.
3. Nothing Like the Holidays
If you have an obnoxious family, then you can relate to this movie on a personal level. An all time favorite of mine, in which family drama breaks out, but in the end it is family that helps you get through anything.
4. The Holiday
The non-traditional Chrismas has its perks and in this movie, it is through a non-conventional Christmas that the leading actresses find love. A Christmas chick-flick where true love comes out on top, it does not get better than this.
5. The Nightmare Before Christmas
This dark Christmas tale is a classic in its own right, beautifully combining the terror of Halloween and the cheer of Christmas. It is almost impossible to not watch this during the holiday season. The best part of this movie is that you get to watch it for two holidays. It doesn't get much better than that.
6. Elf
Here we have a movie that is enjoyed by both kids and grown-ups. With the family humor that surrounds Buddy the Elf and at moments, deep satire comments and messages, the movie is entertaining for everyone.
So, if you feel like you are getting too old for the classic Christmas movies, grab yourself a glass of wine, coffee, hot chocolate, or whatever you grown-up's drink and have a movie marathon. These movies will both satisfy your need for an adult story plot, all while at the same time including that wonderful Christmas joy that we so desperately crave during the holiday season.
