6 Makeup Essentials Every Girl Must Have

Advice from one poor college student to another.

I've learned a lot from trial and error about the overwhelming jungle that is the makeup world, but here are some products I have found that make looking flawless a little easier. (Most of the products I have picked out are found in your local drugstore, so don't worry. I'm a poor college student too).

1. A Good Mascara

A staple in the makeup world is eye makeup. If you aren't talented (like me) at the false lashes, here's a product I recommend: Covergirl's Lash Blast Volume. It gives you both volume and length. It's the perfect compliment to any makeup look.

2. A Versatile Eyeshadow Palette

One of the easiest ways to change up any makeup look is through an eyeshadow look. One that I recommend is a nude or earthy toned variety. They are the easiest to work with and give an array of looks. But don't be afraid a little bit of color. I love my Moodstruck Addiction Shadow Palette by Younique. (This is the only product that I have listed that isn't available in stores, but that shouldn't let that stop you from checking it out!)

3. A Solid Lip Base

The worst thing ever is dry lips, am I right? A great way to avoid that is with a good lip balm or chapstick. One that has been a favorite of mine for a long time is the Burt's Bees s Moisturizing Lip Balm in the flavor Honey. It will leave your lips feeling amazing and your lip color of choice will glide right on.

4. Contouring

A makeup trend that has become popular recently is the idea of contouring. If you want those chiseled cheekbones and perfect nose, then this is the makeup craze for you. A drug store product that I have found to work fairly well is the Wet n Wild Megaglo Contouring Palette in the shade 750 A, or Caramel Toffee. It is definitely more for pink based skin tones, but is good for the price that it is at.

5. A Beauty Sponge

This is another recent beauty trend, but I have found it to be a Godsend. Instead of using a brush or your hands, which tends to leave streak marks and uneven coverage, the sponge evenly spreads your foundation and gives you a really nice finish. The pointed tip allows you to reach those hard to reach areas and the fatter end is for buffing and blending. It's super handy. The drug store version of the Beauty Blender that I have found that works well is the e.l.f Make Up Blending Sponge.

6. Makeup Remover

One of the most important parts of your beauty routine is how you take off your makeup. I hate doing this part, especially after a long night out, but it is super important. But, here is a painless alternative to that problem: Garnier's Skin Active Micellar Cleansing Water. Just a couple cotton balls and you're good to go. It is formulated so that you don't have to wash your face afterwards. Heck yeah!

Whether you're commuting or dorming, your first year of college is a huge adjustment. The transition from living with parents to being on my own was an experience I couldn't have even imagined- both a good and a bad thing. Here's a personal archive of a few of the things I learned after going away for the first time.

As an English Major in college, I have a lot of writing and especially creative writing pieces that I work on throughout the semester and sometimes, I'll find it hard to get the motivation to type a few pages and the thought process that goes behind it. These are eleven thoughts that I have as a writer while writing my stories.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.

For many undergraduates across the nation, the home stretch has begun. Only one more semester remains in our undergraduate career. Oh, the places we will go! For the majority of college seniors, this is simultaneously the best and worst year out of the past four and here’s why.

1. The classes you are taking are actually difficult.

A schedule full of easy pottery throwing and film courses is merely a myth on the average campus. With all of those prerequisites for the upper-level courses and the never-ending battle you fight each year during registration for limited class seats, senior year brings with it the ability to register for the final courses you need to fulfill your major. Yet, these are not the easy entry level courses. These are the comprehensive, end of major, capstone courses designed to apply the knowledge from all your previous courses, usually in the form of an extensive research paper or engaged learning project. The upside is you actually probably really enjoy these classes but alas there is no room for slackers here.
