The world we live in today makes it so easy to complain about how the present will never compare to our past. We're binge-watching 90s sitcoms on Netflix, buying record players with classic vinyl, and wasting our time and phone batteries playing an updated version of our favorite childhood game-turned-franchise.
While it does seem difficult and maybe, to some, even a little "uncool" to acknowledge that there has been recent creative efforts that are actually pretty awesome, it isn't for me.
In 2009, "My Name is Earl" was cancelled, and while there was a collective sigh of relief among their viewership, NBC needed a replacement for that time slot. The world was soon blessed by the network's second mock-umentary series, "Parks and Recreation".
While it took about a season or two to find their footing (**Mark Brendanawicz, who?**), the fictional Parks Department of Pawnee Indiana tickled our funny bones with its political satire and melted our hearts simultaneously. For seven seasons, NBC charmed our pants off with yet another incredible ensemble cast of characters from whom we've all learned so much.
1. You can't please everyone
In her career, Leslie Knope was constantly bombarded with difficult choices that impacted her city and many times, there were at least a few Pawneeans that were left unsatisfied. It doesn't matter where you work, there will be times where there is no way your decisions will make everyone around you happy; Aaaand as Leslie is clearly conveying, it can be super frustrating at times, but that's perfectly normal.
2. It's OK to treat yourself every once in a while
Life can get a little monotonous at times and that sucks; but sometimes, the best medicine is a little retail therapy. Whether it's shopping for pocket squares or finally splurging on those fancy cupcakes you've been eyeing on Instagram, sometimes you just need one day of frivolous spending to acknowledge that your worth those things and more EVERY DAY.
3. Friends are one of life's most amazing gifts
Leslie and Ann, Ben and Chris, Donna and Tom...the list goes on. With the exchange of countless scrapbooks, handcrafted furniture and framed government documents, the Pawnee Parks Department taught us how amazing friends are. In fiction and reality, there are so many amazing people who come in all shapes and sizes and a select few CHOOSE to put up with you. That is a beautiful thing.
4. Breakfast food is delicious and acceptable at any time of day
5. Feminism is IMPORTANT
6. Follow your dreams!!
If my boy Tommy Haverford has taught us anything, it's that you have to shoot for the moon... even if there's a chance your rocket ship may sputter off and you have to abandon your mission. Life isn't worth living if you're not doing what you love. Entertainment 720, Rent-a-Swag and Tom's Bistro reminded me to not let the fear of a possible failure get in the way of pursuing your passions.
