6 Life Lessons From Wiz Khalifa's Mom

Peachie has some things we all need to hear.

6 Life Lessons From Wiz Khalifa's Mom

Peachie Wimbush, Wiz Khalifa's mom, recently visited Robert Morris University as part of the Diversity Speaker Series. As with any speaker brought to the school it was an eye opening learning experience. As both a successful woman and mother, Peachie has experienced a wide variety of situations in her life from serving in the Air Force, to surviving near death experiences, to being the mother of a celebrity. From my experience listening to her view on life, I learned several valuable lessons.

1. Everyone Has A Purpose

Peachie referred to it as our "super power," the thing in our lives that makes us feel alive. For her, it was service and being able to serve others. It doesn't have to be some big philosophical theory about why we're all here, but rather choosing to do the things that you love and that gives you a sense of accomplishment.

2. You Can Always Make A Change

Peachie chose to go back to school in her thirties because she feels that "it's never too late to do whatever it is you want to do." You can always decide to make a change or try something new. You don't have to give up on something because you think you're too old or not qualified. If you want to do something, go for it.

3. Life Is A Gift

You are here for a reason, and as Peachie said it "you're a miracle, and you should spend this moment forward acting like it." Your life is not an accident, you have a purpose. Don't just live your life as a means to an end, find a way to make a difference and act like the miracle that you are.

4. Don't Judge A Book By It's Cover

I know we hear this all the time, but it's true. You can't see everything about a person just by looking at them, so get to know them before you decide who you think they are.

5. Don't Let "Dream Stealers" Determine Your Life

There will be people in your life that don't understand your choices and dreams, but that's okay. As Peachie put it, "nobody knows what's inside of you but you." They don't understand your dreams because they don't have the drive or passion for that specific thing, but they don't have to. What matters is that you want to do it and you shouldn't let them tell you that you can't.

6. Celebrities Are Still Just Normal People

While we think that celebrities are these super amazing people that lead fantastic lives that are all paparazzi and red carpets, they're really just normal people. They still sit and play with their kids and FaceTime each other just like everyone else. (I know, we FaceTimed Wiz when Peachie came.)

So whatever you do in life, find your purpose and do what you love. Don't let anyone tell you that you can't follow your dreams.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
