Love is in the air as Valentine’s Day approaches. With sales at every corner, men run all around buying last minute gifts— jewelry, clothes, perfumes— you name it! It’s like any other holiday, where it’s as if there has to be a special occasion or reason to treat someone to something nice. Valentine’s Day, however, happens to be very big among the ladies, as they anxiously look forward to what bae has gotten them for their special day. Now, I’m all for being spoiled every now and then, because let’s be real, as a female it always feels nice knowing a man knows what you like, and put an effort into making you feel like the only girl in the world (even though this should be the case all year long and not just for a day) -- am I right, ladies?
Even so, the pressure is on fellas, and while you frantically search for the perfect gift for the perfect girl, remember that it really is the thought that counts. As cliché as it may sound, it’s true. Ladies, it’s not fair to expect your man to go above and beyond every single year, because not only is that unrealistic, but eventually you run out of things to buy. There are only so many necklaces, chocolates, flowers, and items of clothing you can fit in a bedroom. Also, who says this should only be a lady's holiday? Why can’t Valentine’s Day consist of something fun you can both do? I’ve come up with six easy, fun things to make your Valentine’s Day the best it can be, no Zales or Macy’s needed.
1. Wine and Paint
This has been trending all over lately. For about $30 you and your partner can indulge in some tasty wine and fun painting for an hour or two, and afterwards, they're yours to keep! It's a great time and a great way to make memories that you can take home with you.
2. Try a restaurant you’ve both never been to, together.
Grab a bite somewhere you’ve both never been and order something different! It can be local and simple. Maybe that’ll be the day that introduced you to a new favorite spot for you both.
3. Opt for a home-cooked meal
Personally, I would geek out if bae took the time out to fix me up some dinner. It's so thoughtful and just so sweet. Who doesn’t love a home-cooked meal? Make her favorite dish with her favorite wine, and enjoy a romantic candle-lit dinner, just the two of you. Maybe throw in a foot rub afterwards and relax while watching a movie you both love— sounds like the perfect V-Day to me!
4. DIY gift/ Couples album
Hoooow cute are DIY gifts? Super creative and again, shows a lot of thought. It’s like saying, “I thought of you, and us, and created something beautiful out of it” and shows her you really pay attention and care. If you’re not too crafty with your hands, that’s fine! Just go for the album. Print out any pictures you have saved of you both and compile them into an album for her to have and look through. Thoughtful, sweet, and a symbol of your bond.
5. Coupon books
As a gift that will last way passed Valentine’s Day, these will probably never run out of style because they’re both creative and fun. You can buy these anywhere, and even make them if you want. Throw these in with some chocolate covered strawberries and a beautifully written card, and you have a winner!
6. A simple day to yourselves.
The older we get, the busier our lives become, and often times even scheduling some alone time seems impossible. What better day to take for yourselves than Valentine’s Day, and just do whatever! Take a walk, go for a drive, go to the movies; her choice or his, just have FUN, and remind yourselves of how great it is to be in each other’s company.
Valentine’s Day is known for its date and gifts, neither of which is relevant for the both of you. Any day can be Valentine’s Day, and gifts come in many forms other than a price tag. What matters most is the thought, the fun, and memories you both make with one another, on and all around February 14.
