My parents almost never make plans on New Year's Eve, so I am usually at the mercy of whatever they want to do that night or secretly hoping that some friends invite me somewhere. If you're in the same situation that I am, do not fear! There are plenty of things you can do! Here's my list of what I have done for New Year's Eve in the past.

1. Watch as many Harry Potter movies as you can

This is one of my most favorite quotes/exchanges/scenes from the entire series.

There was one year that I rented all the movies from Blockbuster (when it was still open), baked a pizza and drank Dr. Pepper all night long. I got halfway through GOF until I decided that 3am was a good bedtime and I could finish the series the next day.

2. Play a board or card game

My parents and I played this for HOURS one New Year's Eve! Of course we were tired and got punchy, so there was lots and lots of laughter. Apples to Apples is also a good option, as well as The Game Of Life, Dutch Blitz, and Wizard!

3. Do a craft

Yes, I realize that I was doing a Christmas craft and New Year's is after Christmas, but I needed a good picture for this point.

Crafts are wonderful relaxers, so if you are stressing about 2017 and all that it might bring, do something to relieve you of that pain! Taking your focus off one thing and putting it onto something that requires creativity and patience will help with that stress.

4. Drink some coffee

Experiment! You have the time, so why not try something new? And the caffeine will keep you up for HOURS! Probably even beyond the countdown to midnight....but what's a successful New Year's Eve celebration without staying up WAY TOO LATE??

5. Make some goodies

There's kits out there for tye-dye cakes and cookies!!!! They're some of the greatest things!! Although I am sure that any kind of cookie/cake/brownie/pie would suffice for a yummy treat you can have right before or after the clock strikes midnight.

6. Write

Take some time to reflect on the year that has just passed! Write about it in a journal.

Maybe you would rather not reflect and just want to tell a story! Start that children's book or autobiography that you have always wanted to write!

Get caught up and ahead on Odyssey articles! If you are not on an Odyssey team, seriously consider joining one and have your voice heard!

Catching up with an old friend isn't so bad! Writing a letter could be a great way to do that! It would show that you are thinking about them and it is something that comes straight from the heart.

I hope these ideas help someone out! Have a merry Christmas and a happy new year!

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
