As we all know, Drake dropped his fourth album, ‘Views’ on Friday. He broadcasted a 45-minute long interview and his new album before it came out on his ‘Ovosound radio’. Drake is my second favorite rapper (aside from J.Cole) and I have admired Drake for his talent since the Degrassi days. Drake’s new Views album is set for a spectacular debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart. Industry forecasters suggest the hip-hop star’s latest effort could sell more than 800,000 copies in the U.S. in the week ending May 5. These numbers are really extraordinary for all the mixed reviews on social media. It was hyped throughout April with little hints here and there from Drake. I think the reason for these record sales was the publicity Drake and his team were giving away. It was anticipation for everyone.
A lot of people I’ve talked to had mixed feelings about the album. Some people thought it was good, some thought it was amazing, and some just hated it. The album was overall okay. The beats and lyrics were pretty good but some songs didn’t catch my interest. It felt like Drake was trying new things out and experimenting with different sounds and styles of music. This album reminds me of past albums and mix-tapes like ‘Thank Me Later, ‘So Far Gone’ and ‘Take Care’. But this latest album doesn't compare to those albums. On the ‘Views’, Drake talked about his past exes and dissing other artists. Just recently, he collaborated with Future on ‘What a Time to be Alive’ and his prior album, ‘If You're Reading This It’s Too Late’, showed the bad boy from Toronto side of Drake. People thought that his recent one would be like his last two albums he released; more rapping and less singing. Crucially, it’s not the acidic Drake that’s taken center stage in the last year and a half, on the mixtape “If You’re Reading This It’s Too Late” and his collaborative album with Future, ‘What a Time to be Alive’. Those releases showed Drake at his most indignant, a left-field turn from the emotionally lavish music he’d built his reputation on. One of his songs,‘Popstyle’ featured Jay-Z and Kanye West. When I listened to the song on the album, they weren’t on it. Come to find out, Drake took them off because “people would be disappointed for Jay-Z having one line”. There must be some tension going on between Jay-Z and Drake. It was hinted in his album that a lyric or two was about Jay-Z.
This album isn’t what I expected. I like a few songs but some of them weren’t enjoyable. Overall, the album was good. I would recommend this album if you are thinking of your ex or fighting with them.
