6 Thoughts We All Have Moving Into Our Freshman Dorm

Ah, freshman move-in day. Whether you look forward to it in gleeful excitement or absolute dread, it's the day that everyone spends their summer (and lives) counting down to. It's a huge turning point for us- not only is it our first time living away from our homes and families, it's the day that we turn the page and start the next huge chapter in our lives. The day goes differently for everyone, but there are feelings we all experience that fateful day.

1. I can't believe this is really happening.

After waiting so long for college to finally come, when it finally does, it feels like it's just a dream. When you spend so much time planning your dorm, shopping for school supplies, and prepping for classes, sometimes it feels like college will never start- but all of a sudden, it's here. And it's thrilling beyond compare. After you finally arrive on campus, and then at your dorm, it feels like everything's falling into place.

2. This room arrangement is all wrong.

You're finally in your dorm, and it's amazing, but it's just a bit...off. The furniture arrangement doesn't quite work for you, and you have to arrange it before you're finally comfortable. Once you rearrange it the way you like, it feels like you're almost ready to live there. But there's one thing left...decorating!

3. So many decorations, so little space!

You are now an artist, and your clean, empty dorm room is your canvas. There are so many things to put up in your room, and they add the personality and style that make your dorm simply perfect! It's a gratifying feeling once you've finally arranged all your belongings and decorated your empty walls. But once your room is done, there's one thing left to do: it's time to say goodbye to your parents.

4. How will I ever survive without my family.

s

Now that you're finally situated in your new home, it's time for your family to leave. The emotions can be overwhelming- how will you survive without your dad's bear hugs, your mom's home-cooked meals, and your siblings' loving rivalry? You realize how much their constant presence means in your life, and even though you know it's not permanent, leaving them behind is hard to do.

5. That's it...I'm officially on my own.

It's shocking when the reality hits you that you're living on your own, without your parents or a familiar roof over your head. The feeling is very isolating, and it can feel like there's no longer anyone in your corner. But, realizing that everyone else is in the same situation makes it so much better.

6. At least I'm not completely alone!

Moving away for college is hard, but knowing that most of your fellow freshmen are feeling the same anxiety and fear that you are is reassuring. You can bond over your insecurities, and get through them together! By banding together, our class will survive the daunting feat that is freshman year. Go Class of 2020!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
