The start of second semester, a time when many students decide they will finally pull themselves together and make up for all the mistakes they have made in previous semesters.
As a student, you start off the year thinking, “Okay, I got this” and then it all hits at once, and you quickly realize that you definitely don’t “got this.”
Every single person on campus has the flu (literally everyone), waking up for that morning class becomes harder than you told yourself it would be (never listen to your 2 p.m personality, she’s clearly never met the 8 a.m version of yourself), and every syllabus seems to be more ridiculous than the Rate My Professor reviews made them out to be.
College is far from easy and if you are someone like me, you let all the stress get to the best of you.
With that being said, here are 6 little things you can do to set your mind free as you push through the bitterness of second-semester classes.
1. Create your go-to study playlist
The key is to avoid songs that you will get distracted by. Keep in mind you are trying to focus and relax not dance on top of the table. Create a playlist that will actually soothe you. Artists like The Lumineers, Hozier, John Mayer, and Ed Sheehan are my favorites.
2. Sit outside or by a window
It may sound crazy but it is amazing what a difference a little bit of sunlight can actually make. I know the weather can be crazy this time of year so take advantage of the “warmer” days. Even something as simple as opening up your curtains or sitting by the window can make the world of difference.
3. Light a candle or invest in an oil diffuser
You will truly be amazed by the power of certain scents. As cliche as it may sound, some scents will calm you and help ease your mind. Find the right ones for you and I promise you won’t regret it.
4. Eat that Chick-Fil-A, but not for every meal.
When stressed many tend to splurge or indulge in cravings, avoid that. Treat yourself with little awards here and there (like that one doughnut you literally can not stop thinking about). The key is to make yourself feel good. Do not sit there and binge eat all day long. Eat those Chickin-Minis for breakfast, but grab a salad for dinner!
5. Do something physical
Take 30 minutes to an hour out of your day and go on a run, walk through a park, or take a yoga class. Exercise will boost your endorphins, allowing you to release all those built up emotions.
6. Take time for yourself
Do something that will make you happy. No matter how stressed you may be just close your laptop and go hang out with a friend. Do a face mask or take a bubble bath. Drink a cup of tea or glass of wine. Read a book or watch your favorite show. Taking a few minutes out of your day (not the whole day) to just chill is vital to living a healthy life.
