6 Things That Determine A Good Friend

Everybody has friends. Friends are supposed to be the people you can depend on no matter what. Choosing friends is harder than most people think. A good friend is a lot rarer than most people think. Here are a few questions to ask yourself to see if someone is a good friend:

1. They ask about you.

A good friend asks not just about how your day is but how you are. If anything is happening. A good friend should be willing to sit and listen to you go on for hours about something that they normally would not care about.

2. You feel like they are actually listening when you talk.

When you are talking to this person, you feel like they are actual listening to you. Not only listening to you but actively listening and giving advice. They want to hear more and every detail. This person wants to understand how you feel and what actual happened.

3. When you ask them to do something they do it with no questions asked.

When you call this person for help, they not only help out, but are willing to drop whatever they are doing to help. They do not have to do that, but you know they would always do that. They hate the people you hate and love the people you love. They do not need an explanation of why you need help they just help.

4. They are there for you no matter what.

If you are fighting and not talking, you feel like you can still call for help. That means that that person is a good friend. If they are willing to hate people with no questions asked just because you hate that person means that they are a good friend.

5. You have put your trust in them and everything turned out great.

If you put your trust in a person and that person kept you in good interest, they are a good friend. My father always told me, "People show their true colors in a time of need." A good friend is the person that is there for the bad times not just the good times. They are willing to have their night ruined just to see if you are O.K.

6. You are willing to do all that for them.

If you are willing to do everything for that person, then that means that they are not only a good friend to you but also a friend that you can count on. If you feel like you are willing to drop everything for them that usually means you feel like that will be reciprocated at some point.

Choosing a friend is easy. Making a really good friend is a lot harder than it seems. Choosing someone dependable, reliable and trustworthy is harder than it seems. Make sure that before putting your trust into someone that they are worth it. Not only that, but make sure that what you are putting into the relationship is the same as you are getting out.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
