Writers have writer's block when they can't think of what to write. Similarly, dancers have dancer's block when they can't come up with what to choreograph or what compelling story to tell in just three to five minutes. So whenever I am faced with this dancer's block, I turn to professional choreographies, mostly on YouTube, for big and small inspirations. I have come across various choreographies and I want to introduce some of my favorites that really experiment with creativity and technique. I hope dancers as well as non-dancers who appreciate the arts enjoy watching these amazing choreographies, and realize that dance embodies a lot more meaning than you might expect.
1. Kyle Hanagami and Hayley Fitzgerald Choreography: Sweater Weather by Alyson Stoner and MAX
I really enjoy watching Kyle Hanagami's choreographies, but I have to say this one is by far my favorite. Performed by the two choreographers, this beautiful choreography is so cute and sweet that it is almost impossible to watch without putting a smug smile on your face. One unique thing about this choreography is that it's set in a natural setting, not on a stage, which makes it appear as if we're taking a sneak peek on an actual couple's cute moments in life.
2. Jade Hale-Christofi Choreography: Take Me To Church by Hozier
Performed by the professional ballet dancer Sergei Polunin, I have to say, this is the best choreography of Hozier's Take Me To Church as it is perfect in technique and in artistic expression. This choreography really highlights the beauty of dance, as it portrays the energy, physique, creativity, expressiveness and technique required to become a beautiful and graceful dancer like Polunin himself.
3. Jay Kim and Hyojin Choi Choreography: Surrender by Cash Cash
One Million Dance Studio, with over three million subscribers, is well-known for its unique, mind-blowing hip-hop choreographies. I had a hard time choosing since there were so many amazing choreographies that gave me inspiration, but I chose the one below since it is one of the best hip-hop duet I have seen so far!
4. Prodijig Choreography: Pon De Floor by Major Lazer and Scary Monsters And Nice Sprites by Skrillex
This choreography was showcased as the final performance for Got To Dance Series 3, by a talented group named Prodijig. Taking a contemporary twist on Irish dancing, the Prodijig awed the world with its perfect teamwork and powerful choreography. It is truly amazing how every one of them can execute the same sound with their feet at the exact same time despite how fast the choreography is!
5. Trần Ly Ly Choreography: Just Give Me A Reason-Pink ft. Nate Reuss
Performed by Quang Đăng & Hoàng Yến , this choreography is well-produced as the camera seems to capture the emotion of the dancers perfectly. The two dancers exhibit great technique that almost seems like defying gravity and vivid expression, it is impossible to watch without being astounded.
6. Josh Killacky Choreography: Born To Be by Scott Winn
One of my favorite YouTubers of all time, Scott DW does an amazing job reinterpreting Trump and Clinton as dancers having a battle for the presidential debate. Unbelievably hilarious and cleverly done, this choreography is a must-watch if you are in for some laughter and jaw-dropping talent. (If you just want to see the dance, then skip forward to 1:55.)
