Halloween is over, I'm afraid. Time to pack in all the ghosts and thrills and goblins and scares, right? Not necessarily - here are six creepy shows to binge watch between now and Christmas!
1. Hannibal
Just as it says on the tin, Hannibal is based on everyone's favorite fictional cannibal. Set mostly in modern day Virginia and Maryland, it follows the exploits of Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), special consultant for the FBI; Jack Crawford (Lawrence Fishburne), head of the Behavioral Science unit; and the man himself, Dr. Hannibal Lector (Mads Mikkelsen), who's playing them and everyone else like a fiddle. Based on the book Red Dragon by Thomas Harris, the three seasons of Hannibal are thrillingly terrifying as you watch the three work together to catch murderers, all while Hannibal indulges in his favorite dishes and serves up a lot of cannibalistic puns.
2. Westworld
Based on the 1973 film of the same name, Westworld is a brand new show set in a futuristic theme park - so new, in fact, that there are only 4 episodes out at the moment (so, a very short binge watch). The grossly rich can act out their wildest fantasies in an Old West setting, complete with androids to play all the expected parts. I freely admit to not knowing much about this show, as I haven't seen it myself yet, but have heard nothing but good things about it. The cast includes Luke Hemsworth (older brother to Chris [Thor, Thor and Avengers] and Liam [Gale, Hunger Games]), Evan Rachel Wood, and Anthony Hopkins as the creator of Westworld.
3. Supernatural
Starting in 2005, Supernatural is well into its 12th season at this point. Centered around brothers Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean (Jensen Ackles), the show is about hunting down both supernatural creatures and answers. I will say that the first 5 seasons are the best, and the show was originally intended to end there. If you feel brave, you can go up to season 9, but I stopped watching entirely at the beginning of season 10. The plot is too forced, the monsters keep getting more ridiculous, and quite frankly the writing was getting worse and worse. Those first 5 seasons, though, are incredible, and I highly reccomend them.
4. American Horror Story
Once again, I've yet to personally watch any of the AHS series/seasons, and there's quite a few. The first, Murder House, is set in 2011 Los Angeles - but then the second, Asylum, is set in 1964 Massachusetts. Coven jumps back up to 2013 Louisiana, while Freak Show is in 1952 Florida, and Hotel takes place back in Los Angeles, in 2015. The sixth season is titled Roanoak, and is set in modern day North Carolina. The most outstanding thing about AHS is how broadly it reaches - even people who don't normally like horror shows seem to love it. Evan Peters, Sarah Paulson, and Lily Rabe are notably the only actors to appear in every season thus far.
5. Daredevil
A Netflix original, Daredevil is based on the Marvel comicbook character Matt Murdock - blind attorney by day, he becomes the masked vigilante Daredevil at night, protecting the Hell's Kitchen area of New York. There's definitely a Batman-esq feel to it; affluent local man who secretly takes down bad guys in the middle of the night, though Murdock generally has a better sense of humor. While it's not outright horror, there are definitely some "viewer discretion advised" scenes, and it affect a dark tone very quickly.
6. Jessica Jones
Another Netflix original, and another Marvel character, Jessica Jones follows the title character, a former superhero who now runs her own detective business. Covering such topics as assault, rape, and PTSD in the first season, a dark, gritty air was set immediately. Jones is portrayed by Krysten Ritter, and her main opposition is seen in Kilgrave, played by David Tennant, who can control the minds of other people.
