6 Confessions From A Frozen Yogurt Shop Employee

It isn't always fun.

TG's Frozen Yogurt

At the beginning of the summer, I got hired to work at a frozen yogurt shop. I was excited to be earning money for myself as a high schooler. It was my first job and I heard it was relatively easy, relatively being the key word. There were many struggles that went along with working at a froyo shop.

1. The mess

I am at a loss for words to explain the amount of mess I have to clean up at the end of my shift. The machines drip and some even splash when you first pull down the lever. I will continuously wipe down the area in front of machines so it looks clean for customers but it seems that every time I clean it, I come back to a bigger mess. It is an endless cycle. Do not even get me started on the toppings bar. I will never understand why the messiest toppings, a.k.a. the sprinkles are in the back. All of the little kids want sprinkles but can't reach them so they end up everywhere.

2. I am not in charge of toppings and/or flavors

Please do not get mad at me when we do not have your favorite flavor or topping. I have been an employee at this frozen yogurt shop for two months - I am not in control. I have customers leave because we do not have blueberry yogurt right now. We have blackberry, isn't that close enough?

3. Money

Your eyes are bigger than your stomach and most likely bigger than your wallet too. When you first walk in, we have a sign that clearly states for every ounce you get, it will cost you 49 cents. If you know you only have five dollars, don't fill up your entire cup with everything you can fit. I can't do much for you if you can't afford your yogurt. Just be mindful.

4. Samples

Yes, I really have to get your samples for you. It is necessary for sanitary reasons. We do not want you to get them yourself because you might use the same cup more than once to try many flavors or you might try all of the flavors and then leave without getting anything. Please do not ask me for a spoon so you can try it straight from your cup. When I catch you eating it before paying and you tell me you were just "trying it," it annoys me. You clearly were doing more than just trying it.

5. Allergies

I always worry when someone comes in with an allergy. The only thing I can do for you gives you the nutrition book to check all of the flavors but then it is up to you. Some of the toppings may have crumbs from other toppings in it. Your best bet is to stay super safe by eating what you know is okay and not take any risks.

6. I never want frozen yogurt again

When I was first hired, I knew that I liked frozen yogurt but it was not my favorite. After working there for two months, it is far from my favorite. For some reason, I have no desire to bring home a cup of yogurt after my shift. I think I'm pretty much sick of frozen yogurt after being around it for a while.

It's officially December. There is less than a month of 2024, and I still feel like yesterday was summer. Now comes the merriest time of the year, the Christmas season.

Everyone has been waiting for this time of year since mid-October (which is way too early, in my opinion) or before. It's a time of love, family, memory-making, and gift-giving. A lot of times when I ask friends and family what they want, I get a lot of "I don't know" or "I don't care."

I was sitting at my cubicle, now that I am an adult, looking at the rain pouring down on the windowsill, bumming on life, wishing for the rain to just stop for a full day.

There are moments where we count down the hours until work is over and how many more days till the weekend, and this many weeks until something exciting. Or something like that? Well, I was bumming because my next day off from work is not until Memorial Day weekend, which is not until the end of May. And since this is my first year out of college being a “real person,” I am totally missing the winter, spring and summer breaks. I am sure all of us have felt this way even if just for a hot minute…
