As a retail employee at an outlet mall who has clocked countless hours working in the fitting room, I hope that you'll keep these confessions in mind the next time that you enter a fitting room.
1. Please be patient!
Understand that I cannot construct an extra fitting room out of thin air. Nor can I make other guests try on their clothes any faster. They were there first, I'm sorry. Remember what they told you in Kindergarten and wait your turn.
2. Don't leave your clothes in the fitting room
There's nothing better than when a customer leaves the fitting room and hands you nothing as they leave. That is until you check the room and there's a pile of your inside out and clothes off their hangers on the floor and the bench. Please be kind and hand us the clothes.
3. With that said, put your clothes on the hanger, please
The fitting room goes very fast. It's stressful to be handed a pile of inside-out clothes not on their hangers while you have a line of 10 customers waiting angrily to be let into rooms. I'm just an employee, please be nice to me.
4. Let me clean the dressing room before you enter
The fitting rooms get dusty very quickly and they also can become cluttered with hangers, stickers, and clothes if you don't let me do a quick sweep of the room first. This is also a way that we look for theft and will know who stole what.
5. Stop trying to open the door
It's locked. I promise it's locked. Just give me two seconds to grab the key and unlock the door for you.
6. We're just people
I work at a retail store because I like clothes. Ask me for advice, I want to help! I'll let you know if those pants fit you and I'd be happy to grab that shirt in another size.
