6 Common Dancer Dreams

The rehearsal and performance process consumes our lives even when we sleep.

Dance Concert 2016: The Goddess ran this past weekend at Otterbein University. I had the great pleasure of being part of this show. Having taken part in many dance performances throughout my lifetime, I’ve seen a trend in the topics of dancers’ dreams when a show is near curtain call. If you’re a dancer, hopefully you can relate, but if you’re not a dancer, hopefully you’ll get a good laugh out of it.

Forgetting the choreography when you step on stage

You’ve been rehearsing daily for weeks and you have the choreography down but there is always this fear of totally blanking when you go onto stage since hundreds of people will be watching.

Stepping on stage in front of an audience and realizing you’re naked

You step on stage with the confidence that you’re going to perform well and the audience starts laughing. You look down to see if you put your costume on wrong and notice that you forgot to put your costume on at all. How embarrassing!

Getting put into a section of the performance that you did not learn

You’re waiting patiently backstage for your next cue and the director tells you that you’re next, but it’s not a piece you learned. You panic and think it’s a mistake but they confirm that they decided to put you in last minute. Good luck making it look like you know choreography that you don’t know in the slightest.

Having a hair, makeup or costume malfunction

Dancers’ hair, makeup and costumes are set a certain way because that’s the vision of the designer. There are so many things that could go wrong that it’s difficult to not dream of a mal-function of one kind or another.

Being able to do movement you cannot do in real life

In my dreams, I am way more flexible than I actually am. I can do multiple turns in a row without stopping.

Forgetting to go to the performance

Do you ever jolt yourself awake in the morning, thinking you’re late for something important? Sometimes in my dreams I jolt myself awake because I slept through the dance concert.

No matter what kinds of dreams dancers have leading up to a performance, performing is the only dream that matters. Performing is worth every minute of rehearsal and more. Each performance is a dream come true.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.

11 Times Aubrey Plaza Described Sophomore Year

"I don't want to do things. I want to do not things."

Aubrey Plaza is one of my favorite humans in Hollywood. She's honest, blunt, unapologetic, and hilarious. I just started my sophomore year of college, and found that some of her best moments can accurately describe the start of the school year.

1. When your advisor tells you that you should declare a major soon.

2. Seeing the lost and confused freshmen and remembering that was you a short year ago, and now being grateful you know the ins and outs of the campus.

3. Going to the involvement fair to sign up for more clubs knowing that you are already too involved.

4. When you actually do the reading required for the first class.

5. Seeing your friends for the first time since last semester.

6. When you're already drowning in homework during syllabus week.

7. Realizing you don't have the same excitement for classes as you did as a freshman.

8. Going home and seeing people from high school gets weirder the older you get.
