Charlotte has a pretty awesome selection of small, independent coffee shops in and around town. And as a college student and writer, a decent part of my time and livelihood is spent in coffee shops. So I took the time to name a few of my favorites (in no particular order).
1. Smelly Cat Coffee House
How can you not love a coffee shop that is (vaguely) cat-themed? Smelly Cat captures its own culture in its atmosphere and clientele. The employees are always super friendly and charismatic, and whether you sit inside or out (weather allowing) you get to experience a piece of the heart of NODA. However finding a seat, or a parking spot for that matter, on a weekend is far more challenging than some (including me) are usually willing to put up with.
2. Julia's Cafe & Books
This coffee shop and bookstore will always hold a special place in my heart, not only because we share a name but because it was the spot of my first date and is part of a Habitat for Humanity store. It is itty bitty and quiet and cute. It isn't really the place to sit down and do homework, though, but certainly more as a hangout spot, or a place to relax and browse the books and records for sale.
3. Central Coffee Company
Maybe I love this place because it's right next to a gay sex shop, or because it's awesome blackboard menu, or maybe just because they overfill their mugs just a tad, which means all the more delicious drink to sip and enjoy. Despite there often being a lack of space or seating, they try their best to embrace the narrowness of their space where most places would try and expand and maximize it. Because it's true, nearly anywhere you go near the heart of Charlotte is cramped.
4. Amelie's
I would probably be tarred and feathered if I didn't mention Amelie's. But actually, Amelie's is a pretty great place, especially for a college student since it is open 24/7! (Yes, really!) I go to Amelie's for two things -- either to treat myself to a mildly overpriced pastry or to knock out an essay that is going to take me most of the night to do. I also assume this is why most other people go there. However, even on a good day, you may have to make a couple rounds of the place to find a place to sit.
5. Sunflour Baking Company
This is the place for pastries and drink goodness. Good to meet friends for coffee and a treat, and maybe to do some homework though claiming an outlet sometimes is a bit of a struggle. Sunflour is cute and charming and has character, plus their hot chocolate is killer.
6. Nova's Bakery
If you want a coffee shop in Plaza Midwood, one of the most 'hip' places in Charlotte (I sound old), Nova's is the cutest thing. They have pastries and bread and drinks and tea and wow! Again, not a place to sit and study for hours due to lack of tables but cute for a coffee date and then to walk to something like a show at Snug Harbor or whatnot.
