6 Characteristics of A Girly Tomboy

Because I just want to eat a whole pizza while wearing a dress.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I don’t really like girls. About 80% of my friends are guys, and for a series of pretty good reasons. I said it in an earlier article; girls are dramatic and needy, whereas guys tend to be more relaxed in their friendships. This is what girls with boys’ minds truly cherish in all our friendships. It is often said that people pick up the mannerisms of those around them, and from hanging with basically a fraternity during most of my free time I know this to be true.

I was raised with all boys majority of my life, and ended up with this weird balance of being half a tomboy and half a girly-girl. I’m sure many other girls out there agree, there are definite ups and downs to this perfect limbo.

1. You still know at least some things about makeup

A half-female half-male brain means you will likely never be that girl that has perfected her contouring and winged eyeliner every morning. I’m totally okay with that, because it sounds exhausting. Meeting this happy medium means you know enough to at least make yourself look decent, but don’t worry about it too much.

2. Not caring about Valentine’s Day, anniversaries, and mushy things

This is probably my favorite aspect of being a girl with somewhat of a guy’s mind. In my relationships, we never get too concerned with all the gross, romantic stuff. These types of girls tend to not care about working Valentine’s Day (which I usually do as a server – all the tips on Valentine’s Day!) and don’t really mind if the S.O. does so as well. I can even recall a time where my ex was out of town on our anniversary and got angry with me because I forgot to call him – oops.

3. You don’t get caught up in drama

As I’ve stated many times, girls tend to be more dramatic. The plus side to adopting a guy-esque mindset is avoiding that tendency. You find yourself attracted to friends who also avoid drama, and therefore end up with less fights in your relationships. When problems arise, you usually get over it pretty quick or forget it even happened.

4. Hating picking out outfits, shopping, and so on... but still wanting to look cute

Anything along these lines, really. I hate figuring out what to wear every day. If I could pay someone to pick out outfits for me, I would in a heartbeat. Shopping I actually don’t mind so much, but I know some fellow tomboy girly-girls that would rather have all their finals scheduled on one day than venture through a mall. Yet, we still get excited about cute clothes.

5. You don’t always text back

You know the current f***boy trend? Sometimes I feel like that’s me. Usually girls are the ones complaining about not receiving texts back, but girls that have hung around a lot of guys sometimes flip the stereotype. We tend to reply mentally, but not physically.

6. You don’t understand the healthy eating trend

I’m all about eating right and putting only good ingredients into your body. It makes total sense, and definitely is not a bad idea. I just don’t understand how people can do it consistently, and by choice. This is where I feel like many of us girls with boy minds sway to the boy side. I’d much rather eat a whole pizza myself and risk wallowing in self-loathing afterwards. Have some of these healthy eaters even tried In-N-Out? That place single-handedly makes me want to never touch a vegetable again in my life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
