6 Best Philly College Bars for Temple Students

The moment you turn the big 2-1 in Philadelphia you're a part of a new and exciting world. So long to house parties and socials and hello to your wallet's worst nightmare. Philly offers an ENDLESS selection of bars throughout the city.

So where should you go and more importantly what should you expect when you step into some of Temple students' favorite college bars?

Let's talk about the six most-frequented bars by Owls both on and off campus.

The minute you finally reach legality, you'll most likely find yourself in one of Temple's campus bars.

1. Draught Horse (1431 Cecil B. Moore Avenue)

Draught Horse is a stone throw away from the heart of campus. The best time to go is Wednesday nights for the infamous "White Girl Wednesdays." Dollar Bud Lights all around. This is the time you'll find all of your binge drinking classmates who are also avoiding their midweek work.

Draught Horse has a sports bar atmosphere including pool tables, but this doesn't mean there isn't a spot to break it down. You should be forewarned that you're more than likely to see one of your TA's here. Ask them how your paper was!

2. Masters (1535 North Carlisle Street)

Although Masters is the new kid on the block, students have wasted no time getting acquainted with it. Thursday nights is where it's at. You're almost guaranteed to wait in line if you show up later than midnight. The new bar offers an interesting dynamic with two floors open to students.

If you're looking for a calmer atmosphere to hangout with friends, nod your head to some music and watch a sports game, downstairs is for you. The upstairs section is a complete turnaround. Loud music, flashing lights, dancing and a packed bar are a few things you can expect. Although it'll cost you $2 to get up there, it's definitely something every Masters-goer needs to experience.

3. Maxi's (1926 Liacouras Walk)

An oldie, but goodie. Ask any alumni where they would spend their days as an undergrad and they'll probably tell you Maxi's. Although Maxi's has lost some of their regular business with the arrival of Masters, this bar will never go out of style.

A small and simplistic set up on the main walk of campus, you'll find students in Maxi's almost any day or time during the week. When I say any time, I mean any time. It's not rare to catch upperclassmen in the bar as you're walking to your 1 p.m. Not to mention the bar is also attached to their pizzeria.

For the more adventurous travelers, let's head off campus.

4. McGillin's Olde Ale House (1310 Drury Street)

An all time favorite. Pick any day of the week with any group of friends and you guaranteed a blast. If you're into throwback jams, sing-alongs and cheap pitchers of beer this is the place for you. Opened in 1860, it's the oldest continually operated tavern in the city. A fun fact I personally like to us as the reasoning for my frequent visits. "I'm learning the city's history and culture, Dad."

Although there're two floors open to bar goes, most of the time McGillin's is absolutely packed. If you're not shouting at your friends in conversation, you're doing it wrong. Dim-lighted with tables placed closely together you're sure to make some new friends.

5. Cavanaugh's River Deck (417 North Columbus Boulevard)

Every other weekend Temple students find themselves at Cavanaugh's using an open bar under someone's name they never met. This bar is notorious for hosting $20 open bars like they're going out of style. Only the finest (cheapest) liquor will get you through the night.

You'll get pushed and you'll get shoved, but you'll have a great time reliving your house party days while drinking legally. If you don't like to dance, this is not the place for you. The best part of the bar is outside on the River Deck (hence the name)! Pretty much anything goes at Cavanaugh's… except for wearing your hat backwards. One of the stranger rules of the bar. Sorry guys!

6. Fox & Hound (1510 Spruce Street)

Formerly the mecca for underage drinkers, Fox & Hound is one of Philly's beloved sports tavern. Tuesdays are regularly referred to as "Fox Days." Two dollar drafts starting at 11 a.m. until 2 a.m. Fox & Hound is a guy's guy bar. There's no dancing here, but you can expect to find every relevant sports game to Philadelphia fans playing on large screens. Not to mention their bar appetizers are absolutely delicious!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.

Yes, it IS a sport. Yes, I fall all the time. No, I do not ride in jeans with a cowgirl hat on.

Growing up I have always wanted to own a horse. My grandparents own a well known equestrian facility in Georgia, so I have been riding since I was born. A bond between a person and their horse is a bond so strong that it cannot be broken. Everywhere I went I wanted to be around horses, even forcing my family to go on trail rides during vacations. Horses have been a part of my life for as long as I can remember has taught me great responsibility, as well as 14 things that all equestrians can relate to.

College is super hard. Between working, studying, and having a social life, it feels like a struggle to just keep afloat.

I understand. When you feel like your drowning and there's no way to stay afloat I understand that it feels like everyone else is doing just fine. I understand all the frustration, long nights in the library, and that feeling that you want to just throw in the towel. I understand that sometimes it's too hard to get out of bed because your brain is already filled with too much information to remember. I understand because I am also feeling pretty burnt out.

No Matter How Challenging School Gets, You Have To Put Your Health First — A Degree Won't Mean Anything If You're Dead

Some of the best advice I've ever received was from my social studies teacher in sophomore year of high school. He stated, "If you don't know it at midnight, you're not going to know it for the 8 a.m. exam, so get some sleep."

It's such a simple piece of advice, but it holds so much accuracy and it's something that the majority of college students need to hear and listen to. "All-nighters" are a commonality on college campuses in order to cram in studying for an exam that is typically the next day.
