Having traveled by aircraft quite a bit this summer, I've discovered a few things that made traveling by air a little bit easier. Here are five tips I learned this summer that make traveling by plane a lot easier.
1. Wear slip on shoes.
Most of the time, when going through security, they require you to take your shoes off. It is a lot easier to wear slip on shoes or flip flops in order to make this process easier. Between taking out your liquids and the rush of airport security, wearing slip on shoes is quick and gives you more time to take out your liquids and electronics. You won't feel quite so rushed when wearing easy to remove shoes. Additionally, you can easily slip your shoes off during the flight for extra comfort.
2. Put liquids and electronics together.
Going through security can make you feel very rushed and overwhelmed. To help make the process go smoother, put all your liquids and electronics in the same bag. This makes taking all the necessary items out of the bag and into the bin a lot quicker.
3. Wear layers.
While it's hot outside, the inside of the plane is just the opposite. It can become quite chilly and nothing is more cozy and comfy than a sweatshirt or hoodie. If you get too hot during the flight, just slip the layers off to cool down. Additionally, when you arrive at your destination, the airport may also be cold. If you step outside and it's too warm for layers, simply tie your sweatshirt around your waist. This leaves your hands free to carry your luggage.
4. Take motion sickness medicine.
If you have a tendency to become motion sick, Bonine or Dramamine can help save the day. My flights experienced mild turbulence and the motion sickness medicine helped a lot. It also makes you sleepy, which comes in handy if you're flight is over night or you simply want to pass the time by catching some z's.
5. Sit by a window.
While the motion-sickness medicine goes a long way, sometimes sitting by the window is an additional help to the motion sickness. With all the turns, twists, and turbulence of the plane, sometimes it's hard to discern just exactly what is happening. I find that looking out the window and seeing if the plane is turning or not helps to keep the motion sickness at bay. You also get very beautiful views of the clouds, sky, and world below.
6. Bring a snack.
Depending on which aircraft you're flying, the food and drinks may be few and far between. And while most flights provide a snack, it may not be appetizing to you or you may not be able to eat it due to an allergen. Bringing a snack helps assure that you won't go hungry.
