A summer in Gainesville can definitely be a boring one. If you're like me, all your friends are gone, minus the few that randomly filter in-and-out. My internship and classes take up some time, but for the most part, I am sat scrolling through Instagram and repeatedly refreshing my feed, as if anything new would appear since the last two seconds I looked. Taking notes from this time last year, I refuse to sit around. I choose to explore and experience change. Taking this into consideration, here are some activities to liven up your time in Rainesville.
1. Chop, Chop
A new look can create a fresh outlook for the semester. Such a small difference can indicate another chapter of great things. Also, textured lobs are all the rage nowadays.
2. Foodies-R-Us
Surprisingly, there are so many local restaurants in and surrounding the Gainesville area. I recently found my favorite food place in Gainesville, the Gelato Company, and I have lived here going on three years now.
3. Daytrips
In Gainesville, the University of Florida is an overwhelming presence. It prevents us from remembering the unique, little towns made for exploring. Micanopy offers antique stores, perfect for vintage enthusiasts.
4. Thrifting
Often, people associate thrifting with Goodwill and thus, don't give it a chance. However, Gainesville has cute finds at stores like Sandy's Savvy Chic Resale Boutique and downtown at Flashback's. At Sandy's, clothing and home decor are brought in by locals and typically priced at affordable prices ranging from five to 10 dollars.
5. Sunrise
As basic as it may be, it is a great time to reflect and be calm before starting the day. Pro tip: watch Paynes Praire Observatory Deck.
6. Bookstore
For the first time in a while, I have the free time to read the books that I choose, as opposed to those assigned to me. Book Gallery West is a charming bookstore that carries the classics. Grab your copy of Pride and Prejudice and find your soulmate. At least, that's what they show in the movies.
