Dreams. Can. Come. True.
Dreams are a wonderful thing. Dreams are the one thing (or many things) you want to accomplish in your life. My dream is to work for a National Hockey League team. 5 Seconds of Summers dream? Make it big.
They made it big.
How big? They sold out Madison Square Garden. The Worlds Most Famous Arena. 18,000 seats, from the 300's to the floor was filled with 5 Seconds of Summer fans.
"Carry on, let the good times roll. Sail on, let your path unfold."
Following your dreams is an amazing process. However, usually it is a long, hard, and unforgiving process. In the end it's going to be worth it. I promise.
5 Seconds of Summer got their start in a garage, somewhere in the middle of a Sydney, Australia suburb. Calum was off playing soccer somewhere and was still mainly on guitar, Luke and Michael just started to get along and Ashton was wearing a terrible purple shirt.
5 Seconds of Summer's dream literally started with four boys, some instruments and a dream. Now look at them. They're a world wide phenomenon. I don't think that when Ashton rode his bike for all those kilometers, in his terrible purple shirt, that this would happen. It was their dream, but would it happen?
Then, they did not know it, but the answer was yes. Yes, they would achieve their dream. Yes, after years and years of struggling, moving away from their families, dropping out of school, leaving a sport they could have gone pro at, leaving everything and anything they have ever known. Yes after taking a chance because Louis Tomlinson of One Direction said "I like you". They took their chance and they made it.
As a 5SOS fan we have heard the KFC Story nearly 1938754928894793 times. We've also seen early videos of Calum playing soccer, and photos of Luke and Michael from middle school. We've even watched countless covers on the "Hemmo1996" YouTube Channel that started it all.
If you were lucky enough you got to watch them sell out Madison Square Garden. The worlds most famous arena.
If that doesn't say "follow your dreams" what does?
It clicked for me, three times, during the concert that 5SOS made it. First was when the lights when out, and the stage was covered in a purple haze. No intricate or showy entrance. Just purple smoke, Luke and us singing Carry On.
"Carry on, let the good times roll. Sail on, let your path unfold."
That's kind of a cool lyric, isn't it? "Carry on, let the good times roll. Sail on, let your path unfold." Or in the wise words of Dory, the blue tang fish we all know and love, "Just keep swimming, just keep swimming, just keep swimming swimming swimming swimming."
But, the ever so mysterious 5 Seconds of Summer always has a meaning behind their lyrics. When I hear that lyric I can't help but to feel motivated. It reminds me to, well, carry on and let the good times roll. Accomplishing your dreams is going to take a lot of work. But if you carry on, and let the good times roll, you'll get there eventually. As you sail on, your path will unfold. As you coast through life, your path will show itself. As life goes on, you will find your way to your dream. I promise. 5 Seconds of Summer found their way to a sold out Madison Square Garden. You too, will find your way.
The second time it clicked in my head that 5 Seconds of Summer had accomplished their dream, was before their song, "Jet Black Heart." Michael, our rainbow haired, video game obsessed lead guitarist had a moment with us. Anyone who went so #SLFLMSG knows what I mean. Michael was having us sing back to him, harmonizing with one another. After we finished our little singing tutorial, Mikey just watched us. For 5 minutes, Michael watched us. He stood in front of his microphone, and watched every single one of us watch him. He looked around him and listened. He listened to us cheer for him, and scream his name. He watched us with tears in his eyes. Michael watched 18,000 fans who have him on a pedestal so high he's shaking hands with God, cheer for him and chant his name. When he let his tear fall, and with a gentle sob and a whisper of "I made it" I broke down. That is when I realized it. They made it. 5SOS made their dream come true. When you work extremely hard for your dream, you will accomplish it. When you accomplish it, you'll know. We knew. Mikey knew. The band knew. You will too.
I straight up cried most of the concert. I cried when it started, during "Vapor", "Jet Black Heart", "Amnesia", "Long Way Home", "Outer Space", and "Waste The Night" (not in that order). When my mom picked my best friend, Alyssa and I up at Farmingdale train station, I walked up to my mom and sobbed in her arms. Why? I don't really know. I think I was overwhelmed. I think it finally finally clicked that the four most important people, musically, in my life did it. They followed their dreams. Yeah, they've played the O2 before, and yeah they've played their hometown and yeah they've played at MSG before. But they never headlined and sold out their own show on their second world tour.
That was probably it. Seeing my mom, knowing that Luke is gonna go to his mom and dad/s hotel room, and talk with them and his older brother Jack, Ash, Cal and Michael were going to want to talk to their parents, is probably what triggered the reaction. Knowing that while they're on the other side of the world, away from their families, their home is still their home.
What I'm trying to say is while they're following their dreams, home is home. When you follow your dreams, don't forget where you belong. Always follow your dreams, because no one can make your world the way you want it but you.
"This is our reality, crazy stupid you and me. We know this is the way it's supposed to be."
