I have long been a big fan of the girl group Fifth Harmony. They are five, strong women of color with powerhouse voices who make great music and aren't afraid to speak their mind. Today, group member Lauren Jauregui reminded me why I support these girls so much.
Earlier this evening, Jauregui penned an open letter to Billboard, which was specifically aimed at Donald Trump supporters. In it, she condemns them for voting for the "power-hungry business tycoon", and the fact that their action will reverse the progress America has made for the equality for minorities. She even goes as far to compare the president-elect's rhetoric to that of Adolf Hitler.
In another part of the letter, Jauregui discusses the issue of political correctness, saying that it is simply "a world with social etiquette," where women, people of color, and the LGBT community have a sense of validity and place in society. "That's the 'politically correct' behavior you wanna get rid of?" she writes to its critics. "You wanna restore America to a world where the human beings around you feel scared to be themselves and live and love freely?"
Perhaps the biggest news to come out of this is that Jauregui came out as bisexual. This comes only a few days after a photo was leaked of her kissing another woman at a wedding.
"I am a bisexual Cuban-American woman and I am so proud of it. I am proud to be part of a community that only projects love and education and the support of one another."
She closes the letter with a powerful message for Trump supporters: "If I could tell every Trump supporter two things, it would be to travel and read a history book. Look beyond yourselves, look at how petty the morals you uphold seem when you realize we are not the only ones. We are not 'whining' about our presidential choice losing, we are screaming battle cries against those whose political and personal agendas threaten our lives and sanity. We are making sure you hear us, no matter how much it bothers you, we EXIST."
