It’s that time of the year again! As the year 2016 comes to a close, the Recording Academy has gifted us with an extensive list of 2016’s greatest hits that are up for potential Grammy wins. The list of nominations includes record industry veterans ranging from Beyoncé to Adele in addition to Grammy newcomers like Chance the Rapper and The Chainsmokers. Despite the long list of nominations, the highly coveted “Big Four” awards of music’s biggest night are what everyone is talking about. Because I’m so stoked for another exciting Grammy Awards ceremony, even though it’s about 2 months away, I’m going to lay out my “Big Four” predictions now and see if they come true.
Album Of The Year:
“25” - Adele
“Lemonade” - Beyoncé
“Purpose” - Justin Bieber
“Views” - Drake
“A Sailor’s Guide To Earth” - Stugill Simpson
Prediction: “Lemonade” - Beyoncé
After losing album of the year to alternative rock artist Beck two years ago, Beyoncé is once again in the running for the award. “Lemonade,” which boasts a strong collection of diverse genres, songs, and emotions is not reliant on radio friendly singles and is most deserving of this award. Unlike many albums, the track list flows like a perfectly paced movie. Beginning with a concerned Beyoncé questioning her husband’s fidelity and ending with the controversial yet empowering bounce track “Formation,” “Lemonade” tells a twelve track story filled with uninhibited emotions of every nature.
Record Of The Year:
“Hello” - Adele
“Formation” - Beyoncé
“7 Years” - Lukas Graham
“Work” - Rihanna Featuring Drake
“Stressed Out” - Twenty One Pilots
Prediction: “Hello” - Adele
Adele was the center of attention after sweeping three out of the “big four” categories during the ceremony in 2012. After five years she is once again nominated for the same three “big four” categories. “Hello,” the first single from her album “25,” became everyone’s favorite song to dramatically belt out by themselves inside their cars. After a tame entrance, Adele’s powerhouse vocals swell in “Hello” as they become complimented by crescendoing production and a catchy chorus. These combined effort of all of these elements will earn her an award in this category.
Song Of The Year:
“Formation” - Khalif Brown, Ashton Hogan, Beyoncé Knowles & Michael L. Williams II, songwriters (Beyoncé)
“Hello” - Adele Adkins & Greg Kurstin, songwriters (Adele)
“I Took A Pill In Ibiza” - Mike Posner, songwriter (Mike Posner)
“Love Yourself” - Justin Bieber, Benjamin Levin & Ed Sheehan, songwriters (Justin Bieber)
“7 Years” - Lukas Forchhammer, Stefan Forrest, Morten Pilegaard & Morten Ristorp, songwriters (Lukas Graham
Prediction: “I Took A Pill In Ibiza” - Mike Posner, songwriter (Mike Posner)
Before the release of the Seeb remix of “I Took A Pill In Ibiza,” mainstream music had somewhat forgotten about Mike Posner after his close-call with a possible one hit wonder legacy following the lack of follow through from “Cooler Than Me” in 2009. Mike Posner makes note of his brush with irrelevancy in “I Took A Pill In Ibiza.” The songwriting is remarkably self-aware, and to be able to critique your legacy in that sense within song is a feat deserving of recognition.
Best New Artist:
Kelsea Ballerini
The Chainsmokers
Chance The Rapper
Maren Morris
Anderson .Paak
Prediction: The Chainsmokers
After their novelty song “#Selfie” provided them with a platform, the Chainsmokers have dominated the radio since the success of “Roses,” their rebranding single. Following Roses was a slew of chart topping tracks like “Don’t Let Me Down” and “Closer.” While the artistry of Chance the Rapper, their main competitor in this category, may pose a threat to their win, The Chainsmoker’s success on the charts is what will earn them this Grammy.
These are my “big four” predictions. Make sure to tune in on Feb. 12 to see if my or your own predictions come true.
