Webster's Dictionary defines feminism as " the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities."
One word, eight letters and a simple twelve word definition hold such a stigma that people often pair phrases about equal opportunity or sexism with "Oh, but, I'm not a feminist" as if it is some horrible disease. It is as if anyone who accepts the term feminist is going to break out in a dramatic lecture when in reality most of us believe everything that feminism encompasses.
Feminism does not have to be the Megan Trainor version where boys are inferior and we should all want to be her. Feminism is equality, a level playing field. It is the belief in equal opportunity for girls who want to be construction workers or boys who want to be nurses. There are not enough differences between men and women to rationalize different treatment in school, the workplace or everyday life. No matter how many times we say that the gender pay gap is not real or that Title IX has solved most of our discrimination issues we are still giving men credit for women's athletic accomplishments and caring more about a girl's appearance than her capabilities.
In our world today, we often do not give women a chance. A woman is just as capable of being the primary bread winner as she is a full time mom. While a dad can be just as good at cleaning the house and making lunches as a he is at having a full time job. Regardless of your political views, it is difficult to ignore the fact that if a female version of Donald Trump ever tried to run for president she would not get anywhere near where he is today. Without a flawless resume, a woman's pantsuit and husband's sexual history suddenly become more relevant than her intelligence and experience.
So, don't ask me if I have a boyfriend at school while asking a male classmate how his classes are going. Do not tell girls to drink less or wear more without telling boys to act like civilized human beings.
Don't tell women to smile more or look less intimidating because honestly I have never heard that said to a man.
Don't call a woman bitchy for being passionate or articulate when you would commend a man who acted the same.
The world does not need anymore mugs that read "Boss Lady" when it could just say "Boss".
So maybe add few more dads in back to school commercials, a few more girls playing contact sports and few more boys drawing or writing because as Malala Yousafi once said, "We cannot all succeed if half of us are held back".
