50 Things NOLA Girls Love
Darcy Mikrut

As Chris Rose stated post-Katrina, "she is a New Orleans girl and New Orleans girls never live anywhere else and even if they do, they always come back. That's just the way it is." Here is a peak into some of the things every New Orleans girl loves.

1. Your high school

And you tend to judge people based on their school pride.

2. Nike shorts and comfort colors

Nothing is more comfortable than over-sized clothing.

3. Shopping on Magazine

For the days that you decide to be a real person and not a lampshade.

4. Your Mardi Gras polo

Whether it's actually from Perlis or not, you wear that thing with pride.

5. Rain-appropriate attire

Boots n' jackets, you'll always crave more.

6. Air conditioning

A southern staple.

7. Large sweatshirts

Since the AC is always blasted.

8. Crawfish

They're a lot of work but more than worth it.

9. Chocolate Freeze

Word, word.

10. Snake and Jake's

A guilty pleasure.

11. Late night anything

Plenty of trouble to get into after 2 a.m.

12. Seersucker

Elegant and breathable.

13. Beignets

So long as you're not wearing black or navy.

14. Mignon Faget

You've got your knot rings and your snowball necklace and your tortoise shells and you can't stop asking for more for Christmas.

15. Abita

To pair with crawfish or to enjoy on a night out, you haven't met an Abita you didn't like.

16. Superior Grill margaritas

Because we all know you're not there for the food.

17. Snowballs

And you have a very strong opinion of your favorite one (ahem, cream of almond from Hansen's).

18. Messy buns

If you wore your hair down to class, you were weird.

19. Anything with a fleur de lis

Literally anything.

20. The Crescent City Classic

Since you spend your days eating so much incredible food.

21. Purple Drank from Lafitte's

Tastes like a purple popsicle and goes right down.

22. F&Ms

Cheese fries? Check yes.

23. Going to balls

You don't always look like a zombie in your over-sized clothes and messy hair.

24. Football

Saints and Tigers dominate your fall plans.

25. Popeyes

Nothing compares to it, even if it's cold and has been sitting out all day under a pop up tent on St. Charles.

26. Live music

And dancing the night away without any cares.

27. Gumbo

Nobody's roux compares to your mamma's.

28. Jambalaya

Life-sustaining essential.

29. The 12 Y'ats of Christmas

You can't even correctly sing the original version when Magic 101.9 starts playing Christmas music.

30. Piano bars

Many great options, many fun times.

31. Better Cheddar

The ultimate cheese dip from your neighborhood Langenstein's.

33. Go cups

Necessary for the trek to the next bar or the hike down St. Charles.

34. Jazz Fest

Great music and great food anyone will enjoy.

35. Voodoo Fest

Where music festival meets Halloween.

36. Festival season in general

Celebrating food literally every weekend? OK YES.

37. Mardi Gras

Obviously.

38. Red Dress Run

And seeing the men of your life struggle to run in a dress.

39. Brunch

The best way to recover from those late nights out.

40. Celebration in the Oaks

But you probably don't call it by its proper name.

41. Drive thru daiquiris

A time saver and a blessing.

42. Little Tokyo

Whichever one that may be.

43. St. James Cheese Company

Cheesus Christ, hallelujah!

44. Pint Night

You're sure to stack up the cups left behind.

45. Fifty Cent Night

Once upon a time if not anymore. Everyone and their mamma started drinking at The Boot.

46. The Holy Trinity

And you know this doesn't refer to the Good Lord.

47. King Cake

You may have a strong opinion for your favorite, but you'll never turn it down.

48. Midnight movies at the Prytania

Even though you know you probably won't be able to see anything.

49. Changing words to end in eaux

No matter how obnoxious.

50. Talking about New Orleans

Get us started and we'll never stop.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
