50 Things I Learned My Freshman Year in College

Freshman year in college is a huge change for everyone, and I can definitely say it was for me. I've learned so much about myself, others, and lessons while being in college. It's a big step into the future and it teaches you a lot of things you will need to prepare for the oncoming years of college. It's weird to say I'm a sophomore in college now, but here's what I learned my freshman year at Georgia College and I hope it helps incoming freshman:

1) It's okay to come into college undeclared/not knowing what the heck you want to do with your life.

2) Take advantage of living on campus while it lasts.

3) You will start to hate the food at the dining hall, but it's free food.

4) Make an effort to get to know others. You never know where new friendships will take you.

5) Random roommate assigning is scary, but your roommates may turn out to be the greatest people.

6) Or the worst (but I got lucky with mine).

7) Get involved in campus activities.

8) It's okay to want to or not want to join greek life.

9) Call your parents for goodness sake

10) Classes you think you'll hate may turn out to be the most fun ones.

11) ^ or vice versa...

12) Take advantage of the library and other campus resources that will help you study.

13) You may switch your major a few times throughout college and that's just fine.

14) Being an education major is NOT a cop out.

15) There will be stressful times, but take a deep breath.

16) Some professors are great, and some suck (like they're truly terrible).

17) Don't bring your entire closet from home with you.

18) Communal laundry sucks.

19) Catch up with your friends when you visit home.

20) College isn't high school.

21) Dress like a slob if you want.

22) C's get degrees, but don't aim for a C.

23) Coffee. coffee. coffee.

24) Late nights doing homework become frequent.

25) ^ this is due to taking naps throughout the day.

26) Speaking of, naps are amazing in college.

27) Respect when your roommate is sleeping.

28) Watch what you eat.

29) You will miss your dog a ton.. and your parents of course.

30) Rack up as many A's as you can.

31) MyMathLab is the worst program in existence.

32) The year passes by so much quicker than you think it will.

33) Enjoy the four years you have in college. They're the greatest.

34) Trying to park near campus sucks. Don't even try.

35) Netflix is cool, but don't let it consume your study time.

36) Not everyone will have the same opinions/views as you.

37) Cook out trays for days.

38) Take an nature adventure with your friends every once in awhile.

39) Enoing and studying is fun, too.

40) Georgia weather is something I will never understand.

41) Seriously though, it's okay to miss your parents or be homesick.

42) Bringing your car to college is kinda really helpful.

43) Cookie dough.

44) Late night Walmart runs can be a fun time.

45) God is so good. Take time to thank Him for where you are and where He's taking you.

46) Stand firm in your faith, because things in college will test it.

47) If you see a dog, PET IT.

48) Bouncy castles are fun for all ages.

49) Take advantages of store discounts.

50) You're in college. Have the time of your life.

Friendship. It's defined as the state of being attached to another person by feelings of affection or personal regard, but what really is friendship? Is it that occasional hallway talk with that one person who always manages to cheer you up? Is it that relationship you have with someone where they can be gone for a long period of time, but when they come back, it's like they never left? Is it spending every waking hour with someone, and knowing every detail about their life? Is it the relationship that's filled with fighting, but filled with even more resolution? I've learned that it's all of these things, and every friendship is different. It's a beautifully dysfunctional mess that should always be cherished and never be taken for granted.

cousins

I've known you your entire life. More than likely I held you in the first three days of it and at least one of us cried. Cousins are truly one of the best things in the world and while sometimes I complain about how many people crowd Grandma's living room on Christmas Eve, I wouldn't trade you all anything.

You are my best friends, the only people who can understand what it's like on Thanksgiving, and you are the spunkiest people I have ever met. But you as so so young, most of you are just now starting your adventures in the public education system. I mean, I'm so very young too. I'm not married, I don't have children, heck, I just started my adult life, but I do want to give you what little advice I have. My dears, these are the things I want you to know.
