Before moving to Blacksburg I was warned about the weather, but I didn't worry about it too much. This time last year we had my first snow apocalypse, and I quickly realized Blacksburg winters are one of the worst times of the year.
The first month of winter, you might think, "wow this isn't that bad ... where is all the snow?" Blacksburg weather is quite the trickster. One week there will be people comfortably wearing capris and a tee, and the next people will be dressed head to toe in warm clothes. Although the nice "warm" days (usually 40-50 degrees) are great, they do tend to get my hopes up and make the treacherously cold days much more terrible.
With a wind chill taking the temperature below 0 degrees, the motivation to go to class is pretty low. We all have a small bit of hope that classes will get canceled, but who are we kidding? That never happens. So we drag ourselves out of bed and layer ourselves with clothes and make the trek to class. If you are lucky enough to live on campus, you get to make the walk across the wind tunnel also known as the Drillfield which is easily one of the most painful parts of winter. All the feelings in your body are gone once you reach the other side of the field. Sometimes I wonder if it is actually practical to wear a ski mask around campus.
One of the pros of this terrible weather is no one expects you to look nice. The key is staying warm. A nice parka and a good pair of snow boots are essential to avoid freezing to death.
The countdown to Spring Break has never been more crucial. Stay warm and enjoy the snow, Blacksburg. We are all suffering together.
