It is way too easy for us to get caught up in today’s busy lifestyle that tends to be filled with an overwhelming amount of stress and demands. It seems that just as one billed is paid off, another one is waiting in the mailbox, or once you finally finish your school project, a new one is assigned. No matter how hard we try to get ahead, it almost seems impossible. But fortunately, if we take a step back and focus on the positive things surrounding us, there is so much for us to smile about. It doesn’t always take a million dollars or a brand new car to make somebody’s day. Instead, sometimes it’s the small things that positively impact us the most.

1. Falling asleep to the sound of rain.

2. When a complete stranger strikes up a kind conversation with you.

3. Receiving a compliment after having a bad day.

4. A glass of ice cold water on a hot summer day.

5. When Chipotle forgets to charge you for guacamole.

6. Experiencing the innocence of a child as they play pretend.

7. Finally getting that great night’s sleep.

8. Receiving an unexpected package.

9. When you know you made somebody else’s day brighter.

10. The last bite of the ice cream cone that melts in your mouth.

11. Receiving an email that class is cancelled.

12. When your total at the checkout counter is much less than you were expecting.

13. Cookies straight out of the oven.

14. A fresh hair cut.

15. Receiving better feedback than you were expecting.

16. Falling asleep to your back being scratched.

17. Knowing you matter to someone who matters to you.

18. When your crush gives you attention.

19. Cutting open the perfect watermelon and being so proud of yourself for finally picking a good one.

20. Clothes straight out of the dryer.

21. Finding money in your pocket.

22. When your favorite song comes on the radio.

23. Fresh sheets on the bed.

24. Puppies.

25. Popping bubble wrap.

26. A fresh pair of contacts.

27 Receiving a better grade than you were expecting.

28. Running into an old friend.

29. The smell of a bon-fire.

30. The fresh smell on spring cleaning day.

31. Holding a warm mug when you’re freezing cold.

32. When the team you support wins.

33. When someone asks if you’ll take a picture with them, and not of them and somebody else.

34. When someone holds the door for you even though they were far enough ahead not to.

35. When you successfully divide open an Oreo cookie.

36. A mystically colored sky on your early morning drive.

37. Scratching mosquito bites.

38. Baby animals.

39. The taste of fresh fruit or veggies.

40. Walking out of the gym knowing you dominated your workout.

41. A piece of chocolate at your breaking point.

42. When an old song comes on and takes you back in time.

43. Grandma’s house.

44. Christmas spirit.

45. Fuel perks.

46. Laughing for hours on end with your best friends.

48. When a baby smiles at you.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
