How $50 Gave Me Hope

One person has changed my entire view on the recent chaos in the world, all while I was at work.

If you haven't heard yet, the world has been in chaos for the past few years. There have been attacks on officers, hate crimes, bombs, shootings and deaths of hundreds of innocent people. Not quite the American Dream everyone was hoping for.

Let's start with the attack in Orlando. If you have a phone, computer, iPad, tablet—you name it—there was a notification of someone talking about this brutal massacre. A shooter who pledged ISIS allegiance killed 49 people at Pulse Nightclub.

When I heard about this, I was distraught for those innocent souls. I was truly shocked that someone could walk into a club and kill 49 people. I live in America, where we are supposed to be safe.

Now lets talk about something more recent: Dallas. The deaths of five Dallas police officers with seven others wounded is the most deadliest incident in U.S. law enforcement since 9/11.

I herd about the shootings on my way home from work on the radio and I remember thinking to my self, what has this world come to. Is everything seriously falling apart in the United States? We are America, what is going on here?

I went to work the following day feeling like things were only going to get worse. When would a gunman show up at my work, or my campus, or even the restaurant I am eating at? Things nobody should ever have to think about on a daily basis.

I work at a coffee shop. All of the workers are positive, happy morning people (because we have to be when you serve coffee at 5 a.m.).

I went into work knowing the whole country was mourning the loss of the Dallas police officers, along with the deaths of all the other recent tragedies we will never forget.

On this particular morning a customer came in and handed me a $50 bill. As usual I asked her what she would like for us to get started for her this morning. She replied "The world needs this, pay for as many peoples drinks as you can," and she left.

I was so surprised that someone had given me that much money to pay it forward. Paying for the person behind you in the drive through wasn't unusual, but $50? That was selfless.

I was assigned to work the cash register this morning so I was looking forward to telling people that their drink was paid for, little did I realize how much it would affect me.

One lady in particular ordered a hot coffee, black. This costs about $2. I told her that her drink had already been paid for and her reaction was "you're kidding, there is no way someone did that" I then explained to her that someone came in today and said "the world needs this". She then gave me 5$ to pay for the next persons order and left happily.

This happened about 10 more times. Everyones mood changed automatically, and to see such smiling faces and know that one person changed all of these peoples day made me realize there is we are not some lost cause.

We are America and we are strong. We don't back down. We stand and we push back. We are the United States and we uphold the memories of the innocent lives lost, and we fight back for justice.

For everyone who is mourning I want you to know, despite the terrible things that happen in our country, there is good in this world if you choose to see it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
