Self Improvement Ideas for the New Year

5 New Year's Resolutions That Should Be Yearly

As another year comes to a close, New Year's resolutions are made. Contrary to popular belief, your New Year's resolution doesn't have to be for one year. Also, you don't have to have only one.

Here are 5 New Year's Resolutions to live by every year:

1. Live in the now

All we have is the present moment. Remind yourself to consciously enjoy and experience it. As technology becomes more advanced, there are many new outlets for distractions. These outlets take away from living in the moment. Don't live your life through a screen. Whether it be putting down your phone, do whatever you can to enjoy life as it comes.

2. Improve personal health

You don't have to lose 50 pounds or start running every day (unless you want to, of course). However, adopting healthier habits is a great way to kick off the new year. It doesn't have to be drastic. Something as small as drinking more water, going to sleep earlier, or doing ten push ups a day can be a great healthy resolution.

3. Smile more

Did you know that physically smiling has been proven to make you feel happier? Life's too short to sweat the small stuff. Find happiness in the simple things. When you find it hard to be happy, forcing yourself to smile can go a long way.

4. Learn something new

The beginning of a new year is the perfect time to gain a new skill. Grab a guitar and learn how to play. Take that skiing class you've always wanted to. Go ahead and learn a whole new language. You can only improve yourself when you learn something new.

5. Eliminate a bad habit

You want to be a better person than last year, right? What better way than to get rid of your bad habits. Stop spending all your money on food or going to sleep with your makeup on. Stop skipping breakfast, and treat yourself to some eggs and bacon. Whatever your bad habit may be, now's the time to stop it.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
