For many of us, Tim Gunn is an awesome fashion mentor who isn't afraid to tell it as it is. As many of us know, Gunn recently voiced his opinion about Kayne West's fashion line, "Yeezy." During an Access Hollywood Live interview, Gunn did not hold back when he described the line as a "hoax" and said the models were "basically wearing stretch undergarments." He continued to add, "I think the only thing dumber than these clothes would be the people who would buy these clothes.”
Whether or not you agree with Gunn's opinions on "Yeezy," he has often used his blunt advice to help guide aspiring designers on Project Runway, as well as critique fashion and life in general. Gunn is the mentor we all need in our lives to give us the honest advice that some friends may be hesitant telling us.
1. "But my manners also came from when I was in college and began participating in critiques. You have to speak with someone respectfully about their work and be honest and open, without hurting them."
Being honest and open is an important quality to have in every aspect of you life. However, being very open and voicing your opinions need to be done in such a way of which politeness is incorporated. Gunn reminds us to mind our manners, but never be afraid to speak up. You CAN disagree but do it in a way that is constructive and respectful. You never know how the other person feels or the way they take your advice. Whether we are telling our friend their haircut isn't so good or critiquing a piece of work, we are reminded that people have feelings too and need to be respected.
2. "If someone doesn’t ask, you don’t have a moral obligation to say every thought that pops into your head."
This bounces off #1. It's great to be opinionated, but do so in a modest way. Often times things get a little bit out of hand when it comes to social media comments, and suddenly everything is very negative. State your ideas and thoughts, but remember that sometimes less is more. Just because you don't like how you friend's outfit is constructed doesn't mean you need to tell them every reason why you hate it. Keep it short, to the point, and refer back to #1 on this listicle.
3. "But if fashion were easy, wouldn't everybody look great?"
Fashion is fun, but always a challenge! It's okay to get frustrated over a new design, a sewing failure, or the fact your friend relies on you to pick out her date outfits every time. Fashion is always evolving and is so much fun to experiment with! Not everyone has the eye for style, but us fashion lovers are always here to step in and help each other out. Having friends for a second opinion, a great tailor, and knowing items that flatter your figure are all you need to succeed and feel better about yourself4. "I haven't had a date in 26 years."
It's okay to focus on your passions, school and career over the dating world. Focusing on yourself can have a great impact, regardless of what your friends and family may be saying. Look how far Gunn has excelled and everything he is involved in! Not everyone can balance the whole world on their plate, and he's proof of that. Never feel guilty choosing to stay in and watch Netflix with your dog or going out just with your friends. You do you and don't let anyone tell you differently!
5. "Life is not a solo act. It's a huge collaboration, and we all need to assemble around us the people who care about us and support us in times of strife."
Everyone needs a support system, no matter how small it is! Maybe you finally want to launch your own blog, move to a new city, or try something new, but a lot of people doubt you or tell you you can't do it. Step one: Find friends and family who do support you, no matter how ridiculous it may seem. Step two: Go forward in life and prove your haters wrong. Collaboration and support are a part of every aspect in life. They will be there for you in the best and worst of times. Let the haters stand on the sidelines!
