5 Ways To Reduce Stress

Being a college student can be stressful! The papers, studying, and working weigh heavily on you. Good news, there are a few ways to help you reduce your stress. Reducing stress will not only make you feel refreshed, but it helps renew your mind. Reducing stress can improve your academics, attitude, and even improve your health.

5. Exercise

A few minutes of exercise can help reduce stress. Exercise reduces levels of the body's stress hormones, such as adrenaline and cortisol. You can step away from your heavy course load and clear your mind from everything. It does not have to be a super intense cardio workout to be effective. Some yoga, even stretches, or a brisk walk will do the trick!

4. Dance

If you hit a wall, climb over it, crawl under it, or dance on top of it." -Unknown

When you are stressed and overwhelmed, then dance on top of it! Dance allows you to let go and change the vibe. We say goodbye to stress and hello to relaxing vibes.

3. Listen to music

Imagine putting on your favorite playlist on blast belting out every word to the song. The stress begins to roll away as you are listening to your favorite song. The only thing you are thinking about is the lyrics to the song and what song is next. You can jam out in your car, in your room, or anywhere you feel comfortable. Listening to music can switch the stress off, and help your brain and emotions recover from stress faster than without music.

2. Work on something new

Finding a new task or assignment to work on will reduce your frustration. You no longer have to stare or complete the same tasks for long periods of time. Spending too much time one thing causes stress and lowers the chances of you actually accomplishing your goal.

1. Have a conversation with someone

Having a conversation can be a welcomed distraction when you are stressed. You can ask someone to tell you a joke, tell you a funny story, or just talk about their day. Focus on the topic of the discussion and try to really engage.

Everyone tells you that college is hard, but they fail to explain why. Sure, classes are hard. Math sucks, and political science can be so boring. But that's not even what's killing me about college. What's killing me about college is my deterioating mental health.

As a college student, I feel as if people don't understand just how exhausted I, and fellow college students are. We have so many things going on, all the time, and sometimes it's hard to explain to people how we feel. Personally...I'm tired. I'm sad. And I'm struggling every single day with my emotions. But the thing is, it hasn't always been this way. I haven't always hated school, so why am I feeling like this now?
