I am all about Halloween; it is one of the best times of the year! The weather is chilly and perfect for some spooky fun. And who doesn’t love seeing cute little kids all dressed up to go trick-or-treating? Also, tons of candy and hot apple cider? Yes, please. The only not cool part of Halloween are all of the terribly insensitive costumes that I see. “Illegal alien” and “Sexy Native American”? Every year there is always that one person at the party that thinks their racist and/or sexist costume is the funniest thing in the world. Here’s the thing: being racist and sexist is cheap, and it is not funny in the least. People are a lot more original and funny when they don’t have to rely on stereotypes to have the “best costume.” It is one thing to express yourself, but it is another to knowingly insult entire cultures or groups of people. There are plenty of ways to have fun this Halloween without being a huge jerk! So without further ado, here are some tips on how to be culturally sensitive this spooky season!
1. Do your research.
Is your costume going to be hurtful to your friends and family? Is it poking fun at an entire group of people that have been systematically put down? Maybe dressing up as a “terrorist” is not the best way to make friends at a party. Try something punny or clever instead.
2. Never. Ever. Do. Blackface.
It’s a historically racist practice that needs to end. Seriously, if you want to dress as a famous African American, do so with clothing and accessories. These people are known for their iconic styles and who they are as individuals-- not as their skin color! Want to dress up as Prince? Wear something that he would wear. People will get the idea, and you won’t look like a racist. Everyone wins.
3. Talk to your friends about your costume.
Would they be okay with wearing that? If so, you’re probably in the clear. Open dialogue about sensitive issues is a great way to learn about what is and is not okay.
4. If you have any doubts, maybe it’s a no-go.
Stick to something fun and goofy that isn’t horribly offensive. Left shark? Bob Ross and Tree? Excellent choices.
5. Have fun!
Be creative and share ideas with your friends. There is a way to do Halloween without being racist and sexist. Be the change, people!
