5 Ways to Help Yourself Stay Positive

Lately, every time I turn on the news or look at my computer, I am immediately saddened to see the most recent tragedy that has occurred. It almost seems as if we are constantly surrounded by negativity and hopelessness lately. This can really take a toll on the way we see the world around us.

It is so easy to become cynical and negative, but we lose our precious quality of life when this happens. Even though life isn't always easy and bad things happen every day, it is so important for us to hold on to the one thing we do have control of: our outlook on life. We always have something to be happy about. Here are a few tricks I have found to be helpful when I am trying to stay positive:

1. Surround yourself with good people

Whether it be family, a significant other, or close friends, make sure to have a strong support system that you can lean on when you have a bad day. Nothing is better after a long day than a hug from mom or a long talk with your best friend. I am a firm believer that life is too short to surround yourself with negative people who do nothing but drag you down. Choose wisely and love unconditionally.

2. Take time to relax

Life gets stressful, and in our fast-paced world, we stay oh-so busy. Doing too much all the time and never taking time to unwind is so hard on us, whether it be emotionally, intellectually or physically. Take some time for yourself every once in awhile and enjoy something that makes you happy. Read a book, take a walk, soak in a bubble bath; whatever you need to do in order to feel better and happier.

3. Speak life

Even when something doesn't go your way or someone annoys you, remember the value of speaking kind words to yourself and to those around you. Make a bad grade? Remind yourself that it's just a bump in the road and you'll do better next time if you work harder. Frustrated with your sibling? Remember how lucky you are to have them and tell them you love them. Speaking life will do wonders for our world if we just give it a chance.

4. Laugh

I believe that laughter is the best medicine. Next time you're in a bad mood, watch a funny movie or TV show, or maybe hang out with some friends who always make you laugh. It even helps to laugh at yourself sometimes. Don't take anything too seriously, because life goes by so quickly.

5. Trust God

In the end, it all comes down to God's plan for us. Prayer is something that always makes me feel better, no matter what. It helps me to remember that if we trust God and take comfort in knowing that we are under His hand, then we have everything in the world to be happy about. It's a good life and we are blessed every single day we wake up on this earth. That's something to be pretty positive about if you ask me.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
