As a recent college graduate I know that the main reason I do not miss college is due to the stress that it caused. In those small moments of relaxation where you think you're ahead of everything, you remember that’s impossible. I survived but I know some are still struggling. I came up with the top five things I used to keep my breakdowns to a minimum and who better to depict those five things than dogs. Even if you're handling stress just fine who doesn't want to stare at puppies for a few minutes??

5. Work out

I know all my family and friends reading this are laughing at me since they know how little I followed this step. HOWEVER, the times that I did workout during my four years in college always made me feel better. It got me out of a dimly lit dorm room or apartment and it got me moving and focused on something that I didn't have to think too much about. Plus the extra endorphins helped me get through the rest of the night without having a break down.

4. Take well deserved (and much needed) breaks

Taking breaks seems like an obvious and easy step but I don't mean take one any time you feel like it. We all know breaks aren't all that relaxing if you know you have a ton stuff to do. It's important to break up your work but it's also important to ensure you have finished a good amount of work before you do so you can actually enjoy yourself and feel accomplished.

3. Go outside

I know how dreary college building lighting is and I know how depressing it is to watch a beautiful day pass by through a window in the library. Take your work outside! Go sit somewhere quiet and get some fresh air. A change of scenery can be refreshing and inspire you to take on your next project.

2. Make a To-Do List...and stick to it

I cannot stress this one enough. Lists got me through some of the busiest and most stressful times in college. They help you prioritize what needs to be done and when. Besides, what's more satisfying than crossing things off that you've finished?!

1. Talk to a friend or family member

This, to me, is the best way to conquer stress. Everyone needs a few minutes to unwind and laugh with friends or family. We all need those little words of encouragement and support every now and then and talking to loved ones is the perfect way to receive those...and get you away from the textbooks for a little while.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
