In recent years, there have been few franchises more disappointing to root for than The New York Knicks. Despite undeniable talent in star forward Kristaps Porzingis, The Knicks still are yet to gain my confidence. There is nothing I would love more than to see Kristaps bring the trophy home to the city of New York, the mecca of basketball. However, with the direction the league is going, it seems more and more unrealistic to think they will win it all any time soon. There are many ways the Knicks could turn themselves around and become a powerhouse in the NBA again; and it all starts with tanking this season and losing more games. Here are 5 reasons why I believe the Knicks should not win any more games:
1. Build Through The Draft
In today's NBA, we have seen the assembling of numerous "Super Teams." Teams like the Warriors and Celtics have drafted extremely well. The Warriors drafted Klay Thompson, Steph Curry and Draymond Green; all of a sudden their team became a powerhouse, leading the way for other teams to do the same. Build through the draft. Another team that built through the draft is the Philadelphia 76ers. A prime example of a team that went from the worst team in the league to one of the scariest teams to play against. They drafted Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons; two injury prone superstars with undeniable talent. These teams prove that in order to climb the ladder and take the next step toward becoming a super team, you must trust the process and build through the draft.
2. Make Trades
It is undeniable that The Knicks have solid players on their team who could be role players on championship contenders. Teams like The Timberwolves and The Thunder made trades for superstar players to play with the team they have already built from the draft. The Timberwolves wisely traded their superstar, at the time, Kevin Love to the Cavs for their first round pick. A pick that turned into Andrew Wiggins. However, they were not done there. In last years draft they traded Zach Lavine and other role players to the Bulls in order to acquire superstar Jimmy Butler. Now, all of a sudden, The Timberwolves are a superteam filled with very talented players. The Thunder, already equipped with MVP Russell Westbrook made two huge trades in the off season. Sending role players to The Pacers for Paul George and to The Knicks for Carmelo Anthony. These two teams are now in extremely good shape to make a run in the playoffs this year.
3.Become More Attractive To Free Agents
The Knicks play in New York City; undeniably the Mecca of Basketball. Therefore, it should not be this difficult to attract top tier free agents. Phil Jackson, when he was the President of Basketball operations in New York, turned off star free agents from coming to New York because they did not want to run his beloved "Triangle Offense." Firing him was the first step in the right direction. Now, Kristaps is in desperate need of other superstars to take some of the load off his shoulders. Who can blame him when there are teams with 4, even 5 all stars in their starting lineup. The Knicks need to be more attractive to big name free agents in order to once again stand at the top of the NBA.
4. Sign Top Tier Free Agents
Becoming an attractive team for free agents is one thing. The next step is to actually sign superstar players to play with Kristaps Porzingis. Teams like The Warriors and The Cavs have done so many times, in big ways. Everyone remembers the drama surrounding LeBron James' big decision during free agency. He left Cleveland to win rings in Miami; meanwhile Cleveland was playing terribly, meriting them the first overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft in which they selected Duke PG Kyrie Irving. Irving soon became a superstar, gaining the attention of many free agents including LeBron James. James soon returned home to Cleveland where he would win their first ever NBA finals in 2016. Another example is Kevin Durant and the Golden State Warriors. The Warriors played some of the best basketball the world has ever seen. Breaking records back and fourth. When nobody thought it could get any better, they signed Kevin Durant to a very modest contract, where he would win his first NBA championship in 2017. This proves that signing one superstar player to go with an already stacked team can only mean one thing, championship contention.
5. FRANK NTILiKINA
Last season was undoubtedly one of the messiest seasons in New York Knicks history. They ended 31-51 among all the drama surrounding Phil Jackson and Kristaps Porzingis. However, before Jackson was fired, solidifying Kristaps role as the Knicks centerpiece, he drafted the 19 year old french phenom Frank Ntilikina. A draft choice that resulted in a lot of backlash from the NBA community, including the likes of LeBron James. However, I believe that Frank is a player the Knicks can develop and build around. He has uncanny vision at the PG position, along with his length and quickness making him a lockdown defender. These characteristics make for a very solid Point Guard in today's NBA. Frank simply needs to build more confidence in his offensive game and he will become a STUD. Mark my words. Trust the process.
There are many ways The Knicks could go about rebuilding this mess of an organization, these 5 methods are simply ones I have seen other teams go about in recent years. With the superteam trend the NBA is going towards nowadays, it is almost impossible to win with just one superstar player. Kristaps needs help. I am excited to see what moves The Knicks make in future years and the good news is we can only go uphill from here! Go Knicks!
