A new year signifies a fresh start, 12 new blank chapters in the book of our life. While this may be comforting to some, others feel the pressure to make empty New Year's resolutions of losing weight, gaining friends, or saving money. With 2016 creeping up on us, it's time to reflect on the memories made and lessons learned in 2015, but it would be a good idea to commit to realistic goals that will make us better people in the new year. Below are five ways to start 2016 off on the right foot:
1. Clean out your closet
If you are constantly avoiding cleaning out your overcrowded closet, take a day in the beginning of the year to get rid of clothing and other items that you no longer use. Put these belongings into a box and drop them off to your local Goodwill or Salvation Army. Not only will you have more closet space, but you will be helping the less fortunate with clothing and food. This can also be a fresh start to adopt a new style or purchase a new wardrobe.
2. Forgive and forget
Very few people have mistake-free years. Forgive anyone who has wronged you. Stop living in the past. Nothing is worth losing communication with a friend or family member. Your conscience will feel at peace and you will be a better person for that!
3. Take care of your body and mind
Even though the most broken New Year's resolution is to exercise more and eat healthier, it is possible to commit to a healthier lifestyle. Start by eating more vegetables, exercising for 30 minutes, and going to bed earlier and waiting for the results. Also take care of your mind by spending less time on social media and more time doing something you enjoy, such as reading or painting. A healthy body and mind lead to a happier and more productive life.
4. Keep a journal
According to research, writing even a few sentences daily about your thoughts and feelings has both physical and mental benefits. It can help you clear your mind, reduce stress, and solve problems more effectively. Find a quiet place, make yourself a warm cup of tea, and devote 20 minutes to yourself.
5. Work hard and let the outcome be your reward
Good things come to those who wait, but better things come to those who work hard. Whether your working toward a job promotion, learning something new or getting better grades, seriously commit to those goals. Prioritize by keeping a planner, be proactive by doing something to work toward your goal each day, and be optimistic toward different ways of obtaining your goals.
