Growing up, Girl Scouts was one of my favorite things. We had fun secret meetings, got to wear special badges, do arts and crafts, and raise money with your bff's by your side. Sound familiar? Now in my adult life, my sorority is one of my favorite things. And when thinking about it, things haven't really changes all too much. Girl Scouts in a way was preparation for Sorority life, and quite honestly, it did teach some great and valuable lessons that have helped in Greek Life...
1. How To Raise Money Successfully
I don't know if you recall, but cookie season was one of the greatest but also most stressful times in the girl scout year. Granted, your parents helped a lot with the actual selling part (Thanks Mom & Dad), but you did learn a lot about how to preserver and make it to your goal. This comes in handy whenever its Philanthropy week and you need to sell so many tickets to an event. It also simply teaches you how to interact with others, even those you don't know, in order to raise money for a good cause.
2. How To Get Along With A Bunch Of Other Girls
I never had too much of a problem getting on well with other girls my age, simply because I was a very girly girl and let's be real, you don't really hate anyone when you're 7 and just trying to make friends. But Girl Scouts did show me that even if you don't necessarily like someone all too much, you can still tolerate them and be nice. This turned out to help me tremendously when joining (and living in) a house with so many other girls (and hormones).
3. How To Throw What You Know
Every sorority has their own special hand sign that everyone throws up for group pictures. It shows the pride you have for both your own chapter and the organization as a whole, and it makes you feel so special. Well, this all started with one universal hand sign consisting of three fingers up to the sky, and the promise to stand by your girls always.
4. How To Love An Organization Unconditionally
I remember vividly one day that we were supposed to have a Daisy meeting after school, but my Scout Leader couldn't make it anymore. They sent us all down to the office to call our parents to let them know that they indeed had to pick us up after school. I was so upset because I was so excited to go that I was crying to my Mom on the phone. And that was only because we weren't going to meet for just one week. Clearly I was a little obsessed, but that's okay, because now I'm even more obsessed with my sorority.
5. How To Make Arts & Crafts That Are Bomb AF
While you do learn a lot of valuable lessons in Girl Scout meetings, I must admit that I always enjoyed this creative time the best. I spent so much time coloring and glueing together the popsicle sticks to make the hotplate (that my parents sometimes still use today) just because I needed it to be better than everyone else's (sorry, competitive perfectionist here). But this works for me because let's be real, half of being in a sorority is the crafting that comes with. And now that cooler season is upon us, I just want to give a huge thanks to Girl Scouts.
