1. Make sure everything has a place and put things back in their place when you’re done using them.
Shoes, textbooks, notebooks, and coats can cause a lot of clutter if they do not have an assigned space. Half the battle of assigning items a designated space, however, it putting them back when you’re done. For me, the biggest problem is putting my shoes back on the rack after I’m done wearing them instead of just kicking them off at the door. One trick I’ve found for fixing this is making sure assigned places are logical for my pre-existing routines. For example, putting the shoe rack by the door has definitely made it easier for me to put my shoes away.
2. Take 10 minutes everyday to clean the room.
I know this can be hard when it seems like your schedule is minute to minute everyday, but taking ten minutes before you go to bed to make sure your stuff is organized does wonders for keeping your room clean. Waking up to a clean space will also set the tone for a more efficient day because your brain will be able to focus on work instead of the clutter.

3. Once a week, take time to throw out old papers.
I know it’s super easy to just toss papers from meetings and class on your desk. This can be an easy solution when you’re bouncing from place to place, but once a week take some time to organize those papers. This will help prevent build up and it will encourage you to keep your desk organized.

4. Invest in a small dorm vacuum.
Dorm vacuums are amazing for eliminating dust build up. Excess dust can make you sick and it can enhance allergy symptoms. Dust also just makes your room look super gross. Having a small dorm vacuum on hand makes it easier to fight dust as it starts to build up and it keeps the air in your dorm feeling fresh.

5. Reward yourself when you’re done.
Starting a cleaning routine can be difficult. In order to keep up with your routine set goals and reward yourself when you complete them. The rewards could be small, like buying a slice of pizza, or you could build towards larger ones. Either way goals and rewards should help you stay motivated!
