Its about to be that time again where many students are preparing to go back to college, or go for the first time. Being away from home is a big step, and your dorm room is a place that you can make your own and remind you of home.

Making that ugly dorm room into a masterpiece to call your own will take work, but with some easy steps, its possible. There's no need to spend a ton of money when, with these helpful tips, you can really transform our dorm room.

1. Color Is Everything

Pick a neutral color for something big like your comforter. I would go with something like navy blue, black, white, or grey. This way when you go to look for pillows or additional decor, you don't have to worry about matching. Then add a pop of color in everything else in your room. That way it's balanced out.

2. Pillows And More Pillows

Pillows are a great way to add an accent to your room, but also a bit of comfort at the same time. They're a great way to express yourself in your room. You can get patterned ones, ones with quotes and even ones that are stuffed animals. Who doesn't love laying in a ton of pillows. Pile a bunch on your bed and there ya go. I had 10 on mine.

3. Canvases Are Smart

Canvas's can be a good way to decorate your room if you need some extra decor. There's two way to decorate with them, you can either buy one from a store that matches your design that costs $20. Or you can make and design one yourself that looks authentic and costs half the price. They may be a simple way to decorate, but either buying one or making it yourself can give your room that extra spark.

Tip: Find a design you like on Pinterest or the internet, go to a craft store and buy a canvas and paint. and then try to recreate it yourself. Its a cheap, easy, and fun way to make it.

4. Hang Up Pictures

Don't use a bunch of frames on your desk or even a wall. They take up a lot of space and are hard to hang. Here's an easy and inexpensive way to do this. All you need is some string, clips, pins, and pictures. Hanging up pictures of your friends and family can add a personal touch to your room. A creative way is to hang them on string across the wall with clips.

5. Be Creative

Your dorm room, is your room. Its a place that you can make your own and make it a little piece of heaven and home because your not there now. However you design it is bound to look good, Just think about color and what you want, and it doesn't have to break the bank either. Add whatever you like whether its color, shapes, or patterns. If it's from you, it will look good.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
