In light of the acts of terrorism in Paris that have left at least 100 dead, the earthquake in Japan, the safety of the protestors on college campuses such as Mizzou, etc, it is normal to feel fear and/or anxiety from these types of events with these magnitudes. Here are ways to deal with fears and anxieties that you may feel:
1. Accept your feelings
Whether or not you were directly affected, exposure to constant media coverage can be traumatizing. So, realize that it takes time to process events of that magnitude. Make the time for yourself to feel how you are feeling whether it be sad, angry or both and be introspective about it.
2. Re-establish daily routines
You must keep going on with what you normally do. Anxieties come from being unable to control something. You must understand that there are things out of your control and things that you can control. You can control the daily routines that you would normally do.
3. Write!!
It is good to have an individual outlet. Write poetry or write a journal entry- write about the event, your reaction/feelings. This allows you to organize your feelings/reaction for you to have a clearer understanding of yourself.
4. Seek support and connection
There are a lot of people who probably feel the way you do. Reach out to your friends, family, the people of the internet to talk about your feelings, their feelings and comfort one another. Stay away from those that respond with, "just get over it" because that is not healthy at all.
5. Turn to the positive
Though the world contains much suffering and cruelty, there are a lot of good things in life. There are still kind, generous people that do good for others. Here are some things you can watch that are uplifting and will guaranteed make you happier-
