5 Ways To Beat The Summer Blues

There's no doubt in my mind that summer is the best thing to ever happen to college students. The break between Spring and Fall semesters is crucial to both mental and physical health. During the first few weeks of summer life is great, you can catch up on sleep, hang out with friends you haven't seen since December, and enjoy being home. By the time the month mark hits, summer quickly takes a nosedive because you're bored. To try to cure this summer boredom, I have compiled a list of five inexpensive ways to enjoy your favorite vacation.

1. Go to your local library

The library is an amazing place where dreams come true. If the allure of books isn't enough to get you out of bed, my local library offers free wifi as well as free coffee and tea; I'm sure yours does something similar. Don't be afraid to head to the library and use one of the couches as your personal reading nook. Sit back, enjoy the A/C, and get lost in a new book.

2. Catch up on the poor shows you neglected

I don't know about you, but during the school year my schedule is completely messed up. If I don't have a class, I have work or a meeting. This unfortunately means I miss my favorite tv shows and don't have time to catch up on them. No fear though, the great thing about summer vacation is that I can make myself comfortable while bingeing all 200 shows I missed. Who cares if you've been sitting in the same spot for the past eighteen hours? You're curing your boredom.

3. Put your crafting to the test

If you're anything like me, you have a Pinterest board full of crafts you've never had time to try. What are you waiting for?! Summer is the perfect time to try making that DIY lap desk or paint some canvases. Even if you suck at crafting (guilty) you can still enjoy the lackluster result of your effort.

4. Clean your pigsty

Okay, this may seem like the devil to you, but I love cleaning; it relaxes me. If you're thinking "my room is in perfect condition" we all know you're lying. Grab a vacuum and some cleaning supplies and make your room sparkle like the princess it is. While you're cleaning, go through your closet and take out all those clothes you see collecting dust. You don't wear them; why not donate them? What better way to enjoy summer than giving back.

5. Put your spatula to the test in the kitchen

I love cooking and am always on the lookout for new recipes. Whether you like baking or cooking, there are thousands of recipes to try this summer. Look, I'll even link you to Yummly, an amazing website with so many recipes my eyes get tired.

Even if you don't do any of these things, enjoy your summer and thank the stars above that you're getting three months off.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
