Leaving home to go to college was one of the most exciting yet terrifying experiences I have ever gone through. On the one hand, I was realizing that I was about to really be on my own and leave my family. On the other hand, I was starting a new and exciting chapter in my life. I wasn't too sad in the beginning, just because everything was so new and distracting that I didn't realize how different my life was becoming. But about a month after moving, the homesickness hit me like a truck. I had never felt that kind of sadness and loneliness before, so I tried my hardest to overcome those feelings. I know I can't be the only one that has ever felt this way, so here is a list of ways to help you get through the rut of being homesick.
1. Take a Road Trip Home One Weekend
If you live close enough to your hometown, then hop in a car with a couple of friends and take a short visit home. You guys can jam to some bumpin' tunes and once you make it, cuddle with your animals and family. I know that this isn't something that everyone can do, so the next tip will have to suffice.
2. FaceTime/Call Your Family
When visiting home just doesn't work out, this is the next best thing. You can set your computer/phone on your desk and just talk with the whole family for hours (YES, that includes pets). Sometimes school takes over your life and you forget to call, but this will help with the blues. Remember that your family misses you just as much as you miss them, and that they may not fully understand technology.
3. Bond With New Friends
You're not the only person on campus who is feeling down. Every college student feels or has felt the weight of homesickness at one time or another. Talking to someone who is feeling the same way as you will not only help you cope with the feelings but also helps you make new friends. You guys will bond over crazy, hilarious stories that you share about your families, and the laughing will change your sadness to a newfound happiness.
4. Join an Organization On Campus
Joining a sorority was one of the best things that I have ever done. Not only did it bring me a group of friends who are in the same boat as I am, but it keeps me extremely busy. So busy sometimes that I completely forget how far I am from home.
5. Cry It Out
Crying is okay! Sometimes a good cry makes you feel better, and sometimes this is the only thing you can do. Ugly crying happens. Embrace it.
Remember that these feelings don't last forever. Soon, you will be feeling happier than ever because college is one of the most exciting journeys to go on!
