5 Ways To Avoid The 'Freshman 15' At UMass, The #1 Best Campus Food In America
UMass

It’s no secret that UMass Amherst has been ranked as the #1 Campus food by Princeton Review for the past 2 years.

It is said that most people gain upto 15 pounds by eating unhealthy food on campus. When I first got to UMass this was one of my biggest worries. I had dealt with weight problems throughout high school and was finally feeling good about myself. I did not want all my hard work to go to waste.

Everyone who knows me knows that I am FAR from healthy when it comes to food. I think I ate a salad 2 times in the course of the whole year. I was shocked that I managed to keep my the weight off.

Here is how I did it:

1. Eat whatever you want.

But make it a point to take less: Instead of taking two slices of pizza, take one and fill your plate up with something else as well.

2. Walk to your classes.

Yes, I know that most people already do this, but I have noticed some people who will get on the bus for a walk that takes 5 minutes (Yes, I’m talking about those of you that have taken the bus from the ILC to the FAC). I know the bus is at will save you 4 minutes of walking, but unless you are actually not going to make it to class in time, avoid taking that bus. 15 minutes is plenty of time to get from one class to another

3. Grab n' Go

Grab n’ Go: This advice is coming from a mistake that I made. Toward the end of the spring I used to get Grab n’ Go after lunch everyday just so that I had a snack in my room in case of an emergency. This caused me to eat unnecessarily. Only get Grab n’ Go when you are in a rush and cannot afford to wait in line to get food.

4. If you live on the hill, don’t grumble, take advantage of it.

I know the hill can be a pain, but unless you are carrying something heavy, or its raining/snowing, DO NOT TAKE THE BUS! The hill is the main reason why I never felt guilty about eating whatever I wanted. Part of my daily goal was to make sure I walked up the hill at least once. Use the hill to your advantage instead of complaining about it.

5. Use the recreation center.

There is absolutely no excuse for you to not use the rec center. It’s free.

The rec center not only has the equipment for cardio and weights, it also has a track for running, a basketball court if you want to be with friends and a number of group fitness classes like Zumba, 30-minute abs, Bootcamp, etc. If you’re the type of person that needs company and motivation when you’re working out, grab a friend and join a group fitness class.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
