Some holidays we celebrate are just a national tradition, and then there are some holidays that are celebrated around the globe. Valentines Day is a holiday we all know very well here in America, but so does the rest of the world. Yes, Valentines Day is centered around love and romance, but each country has a different way in expressing our affection.
Japan
On February 14th, the women are the ones going out and buying the chocolate, not the men. A month later, March 14th, the men are expected to return the favor to women. Men give them white chocolate or another kind of gift to give to the women.
Germany
Valentine’s Day in Germany is usually a day strictly for adults. It is a mature matter for love ones to show their affection. Another interesting fact is that a pink pig is a huge symbol of Valentine’s Day in this country. A romantic gesture on this holiday is giving pink gingerbread pigs (not chocolate) to loved ones.
South Africa
In this country Valentine’s Day is celebrated pretty much the same as in America with the usual gifts, flowers, etc. Women pin a heart to their sleeve dating way back from an old tradition called “Lupercalia.” The name of a woman’s true love is written on the heart. This is sometimes how men find out who their secret admirers are.
Italy
Italy had a western way of celebrating this romantic holiday, but back in the day people use to have different traditions. An interesting tradition was that young women who were not married woke up before dawn on Valentine’s Day and the first man they saw would become their husband within a year or would resemble their future husband.
Mexico
Valentine’s Day is not just a day to spend with your loved ones, but it is also a day to show appreciation and love for your friends. This holiday represents a day of friendship, love and unity.
