6 Things Only At UW-Eau Claire

6 Things Only At UW-Eau Claire

University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire is the best college -- obviously I am biased -- but it is fact. There are so many unique things you can only find at this university; some are quite interesting while others are just odd.

1. #bridgeface

The bridge that goes over the Chippewa is just a wind tunnel. It gets so cold in the winter that the school itself created #bridgeface for students to share how painful it really is to walk it. Everyone has learned to bundle up and shed layers when you get to class rather than just walk in only a jacket. David Letterman has put the bridge on his top 10 list for coldest places in America.

2. The Hill

As my roommate likes to put it, someone looked at this big chunk of land and thought "let's put all the lecture halls down here, and put all the residential halls all the way up there." Some students even made a spoof video on YouTube about how horrible the hill is. I once overhead a campus ambassador giving a tour tell the incoming a freshman that UWEC has the biggest hill of all UW schools and there was a study done. Take that Bascom!

3. Footbridge antics

Scrolling through Twitter, UW-Eau Claire police had to give a remind to us all that the FOOT bridge is not to be driven on. Someone actually tried to drive across it last week. In case you haven't heard, a foot bridge is for walking across, not for driving.

4. Rating Squirrels

There is quite the surplus of squirrels at this school, including an albino one. They are not shy either. Students posts very close pictures of squirrels onto the anonymous app Yik Yak with a description usually along the lines of "Bushy tail, let me get within three feet of it, stuffed acorn in mouth, 10/10." In the fall they fill the feed and are everyone's favorite.

5. Chancellor Jim

First off, he goes by Chancellor Jim and encourages students to follow him on Twitter, @ChancellorJim. On Fridays, if he sees you wearing Blugold attire you can get UWEC merchandise or a voucher to the bookstore. He also hosts "Chancellor's roundtable" to discuss topics to get your input on the school and FREE pizza and dessert, a college kids dream.

6. Blugold

This is probably the only school with the mascot being a Blugold. It's not a real bird to start, but Blu is always at events and taking pictures with students. Trying to explain to people of other schools is a difficult task. Through a Google search of "What is a Blugold?" a Urban Dictionary defintion will be among the results with the user "alumni blugold" saying "The Blugold is the esteemed mascot of UW-Eau Claire. While nobody there knows exactly what it is, it represents the symbol of excellence and is sometimes seen in the form of a man dressed as a blue and gold bird, giving out high fives at the bottom of the large hill in the middle of campus.".

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
