5 Things I Have Found To Be Utterly and Undeniably True

True things for every situation.

5 Things I Have Found To Be Utterly and Undeniably True
(Original: Madeline Metcalfe)

There aren’t a lot of things that are undeniably true, but these are a few things I have found to be true in any situation.

1. "This too shall pass."

Whatever it might be in life, especially the bad, ugly, and sad, it is going to pass. Near nothing is permanent and most everything is temporary or changeable. I have found it far too easy to end up being entirely consumed by something that doesn’t matter, and the quickest fix for that is to remind yourself that whatever is happening, it is probably temporary and It will eventually change.

2. Pain is pain, and your problems and feelings are valid.

A good friend of mine once told me, “You need to stop making your problems seem like nothing and start helping yourself. You are so good at helping everyone else and you need to start taking care of yourself.” Genuinely, this is one of the best pieces of advice I have ever received. It really is easy to make your own problems seem miniscule compared to others, and its so important to remember that each and every one of your issues or feelings are valid and should be addressed.

3. Your parents, I promise, love you unconditionally.

It is really easy to forget that our parents would literally go to the ends of the Earth for us. We might not always see eye to eye with them, you might argue with them from time to time, but no matter how many times you screw up, how many times you fail, or how many times you hit rock bottom, they are always going to be there right behind you to support you and love you. Don’t forget to love your parents, they aren’t going to be around forever.

4. Don't forget to spend as much time with your grandparents as you can.

After my grandma passed away, I spent every day wishing I had five more minutes with her. I visited my grandma near every day, and was fortunate enough to live only 15 minutes from her for most of my life. I know it can seem boring to hang out with your grandparents, but I’m telling you, no matter your age, ask them to tell you a story about when they were growing up and I can almost guarantee you’ll end up starry-eyed and clinging on to every word. Just like your parents, your time with your grandparents is limited, cherish it.

5. Chasing your dreams will never fail you.

Sometimes it can seem like a constant grind, but if you stick to the grind and work hard to achieve your goals, you’ll eventually reach them. It’s okay if one day you wake up and a dream you had isn’t exactly what you want anymore. It’s also okay if you wake up one day and want to take the next place out of wherever you are. Sometimes being irrational can get you farther than rational thinking. Trust your heart.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
