Everyone knows the classic Disney movies that have gained a perminant place in most everyone's childhood memories. However, there are many that did not get the recognition they deserve, or have fallen out of popularity over the years. Here are five underrated Disney movies you should watch ASAP.
1. "Atlantis: The Lost Empire"
Why: "Atlantis" is one of the most underrated Disney movies to date. It combines science with fantasy, and shows not one, not two, but four fully developed female characters who are (although one is a bad guy) good role models and do not conform to stereotypes. Also, unlike other Disney movies, Milo Thatch-- the male lead-- is dorky, not traditionally attractive, a nerd, nonathletic, and in short the opposite of the normal Disney "Prince." On the other hand, Kida is a warrior Princess who not only is a strong leader in her community, she is also intelligent, athletic, independent, and completely removed from other Disney Princesses.
2. "Treasure Planet"
Why: This is one of Disney's sci-fi movies and easily could have taken off like "Big Hero 6" has, but for whatever reason it would up not living up to potential either in theaters or home release. Because of this it fell out of the public eye, and the sequel that had been planned was cancelled. Not only does this movie have an awesome story line, it also has a beautiful space and steampunk aesthetic that is just wonderful to watch.
3. "The Sword in the Stone"
Why: This is the classic tale of King Arthur like it is never shown. Arthur, also called Wart, is a young orphan boy who desperately wants to be a squire in hopes of one day becoming a knight. The men he lives with are negligent at best, so his prospect of becoming anything are slim. But then he meets Merlin, an eccentric wizard who can see into the future and who sees Wart becoming a great man and leader one day. Along with the wizard comes the talking, and pessimistic owl Archimedes. The trio go through several crazy adventures, and it makes for a fun and heart warming tale of Arthur's ascension to the throne.
4. "The Black Cauldron"
Why: This is easily one of Disney's darkest stories. Based on Welsh mythology, modern audiences probably wouldn't consider this a children's movie at all, considering the heavy themes of death and necromancy, not to mention witchcraft in various other forms. However, the artwork is breathtaking, the plot is phenomenal, and there is just the right amount of comedy to lighten the otherwise dreary mood.
5. "The Great Mouse Detective"
Why: Sherlock Holmes in mouse form, that's reason 1. Reason 2 is Vincent Price is voicing the villain, and it is priceless. Also if the Sherlocks played by Robert Downey Jr. and Benedict Cumberbatch were fused and turned into a mouse, that mouse would be the main character of this film.
